Hi please could I get help I have a 200 tdi engine with pistons that have ERR 1388 stamped on them are these pistons standard size thanks
 
So if I needed a replacement piston will I have to get one with the same number or is there an equivalent piston with a different number on say std 1052040

You need to measure the bore & buy one to suit there are loads of suppliers of aftermarket pistons
Std 1052040 is =40 tho

If it was my engine I wouldnt be replacing one piston, id be doing the lot & have it machined so they are all the same. :)
Whats wrong that you need a piston.

The side of the piston is all rough had been stood for a while so water has got in and damaged it thank you for your reply I’m not really familiar with these engines 2 of the pistons have 1387 on them and two have 1388 will standard rings work on the pistons or do I need others for each one

The 040 at end of part number shows it’s 40 thou oversize rather than +20

Yes standard size, the different numbers explained below relate to the actual standard bore size and which pistons required to get correct clearance

Can you post a pic of piston also bore tops , if you can feel a ridge at top with fingernail then bore is worn, if you don’t have bore measurement kit , then a local engineering company should do it for £20ish,
I measured mine with borrowed gear and was very close to local machine shop , gives a bit peace of mind ,
If you can’t feel a step not worn and just buy same piston for same bore if it won’t clean up
You can measure rings in bore too for end gaps with feeler gauges

If in doubt get it done by a pro.
The state of the top cylinder is a bit worrying from the pic, the rst should be alright. but if you need to rebore or resleeve that is another story.
