•I recently purchased a 200tdi 'project engine' to overhaul in preparation for replacing my ageing 200tdi 12L. The engine was advertised as having a broken piston ring (metal fragments in sump) but when I stripped it i found some damaged cam followers and evidence of overheat on the cam. I also found what looks like some cracks in the casting in the vicinity of the cam bearings and 'rough edges' around the orifices from the cam housing to the sump. I'm pretty inexperienced at engine rebuilds and am uncertain if I have a problem with my block or not. The lines that looks as though they might be a small cracks could be a line in the original casting? There are 4 of them in similar positions adjacent to the No1, 2, 3 and 4 cam bearings. Its hard to see if they are cracks or flaws in the surface of the casting. Can anyone please advise - is my block a right off or are these features common/usual. Many thanks
