I've been thinking of buying a discovery. I found out the other month I'm going to be a father, so I thought of family vehicles and disos's seem to fit the bill.

loads of help out there on how to fix them, parts are cheap and always a motor for sale to break-up, so general maintenece is not an issue.

However, with fuel being what it is at the moment: economy was the next consideration and then engine maintenece, which was the easiest and most robust to live with?

So out of the 3 which has the best MPG, robustness, and is easiest to maintain?

Cheers

-PS: also what prices/mileage should I be looking at?

300tdi i would say its a wee bit more refined than the 200 not much like but is far simpler to work on compared to the td5 but the td5 drives better and prob gives a bit more on fuel but no ecu or electronic **** on the 200 and 300 a good clean 300 with a well serviced engine is the way forward for simplicity

I had a 300tdi and now have a td5. As far a fuel consumption goes neither are cheap but the td5 is better. Congratulations by the way, landys are the best when carrying precious cargo (or towing it in my case!). I loved my 300 but my td5 as a family car is superb, a workhorse as i need it but that bit of luxury for the family.

i have also had both a 300 and now have a td5 ive owned it four years and its far the better of the two, i use for towing and a family car, i would highly recomend.

I have had the lot apart from D3's. My vote for comfort is the TD5. For simplicity is the 200. Although I am biased as I have one of these. Generally good all rounder that won't break the bank is the 300. Good exams are still available but do take the time and have a good look around any car you see before you buy. Do not be afraid to lift carpets and move trim. Anyone selling a Discovery will expect it and appreciate it if theirs is a good example.

I have got a 300 but have driven/worked on them all. The TD5 is definitely the best but not by a long way. The TD5 uses a computer controlled injection system so delivers better bang per buck, the downside is when problems arise they can be mega expensive. The 200 is basically the 300 engine but before they ironed out some bugs, its still a good engine but the 300 is better refined.

I would rather a disco2 TD5 over my 300 as a daily driver as they are nicer and more modern, i pass some each morning and i do prefer the updated look but mine is mainly an offroader so the 300 is perfect for me, no electronics to break.

If your using it mainly on road definitely the TD5, if you plan to off road then the 300. If your planning just a few green lanes then i would stick with a TD5

Td5 is a lovely engine I agree, post 2002 models are the better option but all are good. They can have problems but they're pretty reliable in all honesty. Much more powerful and not a put put put like the 200 and 300.

If you want to never have to spend any big money on the engine, go for 300.

If you want to never have any particular problem on the whole car apart from rust, go for 200.

Hope that helps :)

Is,nt it widely accepted that the 300 TDI was the best engine that LR made ?.

I,ve owned my TD5 Discovery for over 4 years now, and I have to say, its been brilliant !.

I have an old 200 TDI Discovery for playing in, and although feeling and looking quite dated now, its reliability is AWESOME !, and if it was,nt for the rust that these suffer, I think they would go on for ever.

Unfortunately, some D2,s are starting to suffer with chassis corrosion, espesially at the rear, but the body,s are proving to be very rot resistant.

Theres no doubt, that the Discovery TD5, can bite you extremely hard in the wallet if it goes wrong.

well I've been looking at some 300TDI's and most are in my price range.

Seem that 300 TDI is the middle of the road for, servicability, reliability and MPG. I can't be arse faffing on with electronic EMU's, so I'll stick to good old fashioned mechcanical timing.

Thanks fellas!

If you've decided on a Disco, then all well and good - but if you want a reliable economical family then consider also Citroen C5 estate and Peugeot 406 estate.

MPG:
Diesel disco (doesn't matter which) 25 to 30mpg

Citroen or Peugeot diesel 45-50mpg.

If you want/need a Disco well go ahead, but please bear in mind both fuel and maintenance costs are much higher for the Disco - more oils, more transmission to service.

If you just must have one, go ahead, but they generally need much more hands-on looking after than the average family car. If you are an enthusiast who enjoys getting oily, fine - because you will.

If you want a vehicle for you both to drive and use - think long and hard and get your better half to drive one before you buy.

Land Rovers are great vehicles if you need one, but too many peeps use them as family cars and imo they are not ideal overall, in that role.

Good luck

Dave

^^^^ what he said!

If you're a home mechanic then they're better than anything else and the saving on maintenance and parts outways the fuel.

If you're not however the constant maintenance will cost you plenty!!

Worth it if you use the car's full potential though...
