If I wanted to pay somone to supply and fit a 200 / 300 tdi into my LWB SerIII landy, Who would be the best people to talk to and anyone got a rough idea how much it would cost ???

Glencoyne engineering for advice etc. absolutely anyone who's reasonably handy with a set of spanners can do the swap..

If you take it to a landy garage you'll be lucky to get change from a grand.

I dont have a garage so I doubt I could do this kind of thing with out a garage or off road parking :-(

Supply one urself. you should be able to pick up a 200tdi for around £250-ish. you can swap in on the road, engine out one day and prepare for the new one, new one in the next day. cheapest way. and if you buy a 200 with a rotted disco round it you can scrap it for money.

You'd have to be one **** hot mechanic to do a 200Tdi conversion in 2 days or a ruthless botchmaster.
 
I guess there cant be many companies that offer engine conversions out there?

OK so is it a simple swap, I did hear there was lots of work around getting the turbo to fit? If I were lucky to find a place to do it I would probably book a week off work, But knowing me it would take 2 LOL

its a 360 mile round trip

I would guess the reason the turbo etc is still to be fitted is the fact that it wont fit (one of the big issues of the conversion so I hear)

No way of getting it home

No where to park it when I got home

and once I got it back no time to complete it....

But a nice idea all the same :)

To fit a 200 from a Discovery you will have to notch the chassis to clear the turbo and modify the engine mount on that side as it is a very tight fit.

Plumbing the intercooler and the radiator (plus header) tank will need a mixture of hoses and some head scratching. The air filter box can be a pain to find room for as well.

Don't forget fuel piping too; there is additional work if you are converting from a petrol.

You could make up a custom exhaust using some of the Discovery system (if it is not too rotten as well) and a mixture of other bends from an exhaust supplier or........pay Steve Parker £300-ish for a full stainless system.

Finally there is the wiring to consider.

I would estimate about £1200 for me to do it. That would include the 200 engine from a Discovery. The engine would get a new cam belt and a new rear crank seal. There would be additional cost depending upon other options, eg custom versus SP exhaust. I prefer to be given the Land Rover with the old engine still in situ and there are some parts that will need to be re-used.

OK, open question. How would such a setup compare to a 200tdi 110 ?

I have parabolic springs, over drive and lots of sound proofing etc

where its notched on front impact that will be the weak spot.

I am only talking about a piece about 50mm x 30mm x 100mm.

The 'notching' is required only on one side of the chassis. The overall depth after the 'notching' is still as least as much as the SWB chassis (which I would assume is not weak in a front impact).

...as I say....swings and roundabouts. :)

I've done a mental review of what work I would need / like to include along with a engine swap. My Gearbox isn't the best and I'd like to sound proof the engine bay. All this would take the conversion to around 2k, a bit out of my budget at the mo :-(

But I still think a 200 300 tdi in a Ser III has got to come close to a 110 with the same engine, its still at the top of my land rover wish list !!

Better get a deffy then.
300 tdi turbos dont catch the chassis rail, but the air going out from the housing catches the wing support plate.

Theres an idea, instead of spending a year fitting a tdi, another front axle, another rear axle, suspension springs, etc etc, rather than buy a series and make it a deffy, why not buy a deffy and make it a series, get the deffy and put a series front end and dash on, all done.

You have a very good point re just buying a 110. I had a 2.5 petrol 110 some time ago and it was a nice ride but I do like the simplicity of the 109, easy to work on, cheap parts etc. Plus I would have to sell the 109 to get a 110 (cant have 2 landys, well couldn't get away with owning 2) and I'm not ready to part with the current one :)

2 Landys..... Maybe its time to take the other half out for dinner :)
