Dead cell?

It certainly doesn't sound good but the trouble with just reading voltage is that it doesn't give a full picture and that's why, when you go to a garage, they either have the big old fashioned device with contact spikes and wooden handles or some new electronic version of the same. My first question would be, was the battery fully charged before you started? (sorry, bad pun) Even a partially charged battery can give a good voltage result but it doesn't mean that there's any power (amps) behind it and the fact that the voltage dropped so far seems to prove that.

Think of a torch with knackered batteries. Switch it on and the bulb can glow white but only for a few seconds then it dims away.

If you have one a good, old fashioned mains powered battery charger is your best bet. Charge the battery fully (overnight) then try your test again. If the voltage drops radically again then your battery's knackered. Either that or take your Rangie to a decent battery supplier, they can test your battery and alternator output in seconds.
