alright,
ive done a search but couldnt find anything on this subject.
so here goes:
does a 2.5 n/a diesel out of an early defender fit straight into a series 3 chassis and gearbox?? or will i need a conversion kit etc..
is there much of a power increase in this engine over the 2.25 diesel??

has anyone on here done this conversion?? and problems to consider??

I've never done the conversion or even seen one converted, but I seem to remember hearing that the engine bolts straight onto a series gearbox. I think the nearside engine mount off a 2 1/4 engine can be bolted onto the block, but I think on the offside the battery holder may need to be cut off with the old chassis engine mount and a 90/110 mount welded on. The reason for these mods is that the fuel injection pump is low down on the offside on the 2.5NA diesel engine. I think that a 2 1/4 exhaust manifold will bolt onto the head so that a standard 2 1/4 diesel exhaust system can be used.

I think the power of the 2.5 engine is 68bhp and the 2 1/4 diesel 63bhp. I'd imagine the 2.5s work much better because they have more accurate injection pump timing.
 
Er ok its a ery similar engine block and will bolt to the gearbox with some slight mods nothing too serious. Ask Spyderman for how he did his. Jai
 
I've done it. Works really well, but it's not as easy as just replacing the engine with say another 2 1/4.
Things you must do:
O/S engine mount needs refabricating, I used old 2 1/4 one fitted upside down, combined with 2 1/2 one.
Battery tray needs to go as it fouls pump, I pet the battery under the passenger seat.
Electric fan in front of rad, as engine is longer and fan would foul rad. I used an Astra Mk2 one.
Use old thermostat housing, easy swap, so that series rad can be used.
Throttle cable needs bracket welding up to support it.
Electric supply from ignition to stop fuel, as stop cable will be redundant.
Use series manifold so series exhaust can be used.
Fuel pipes need altering as pump is in different place, I moved the fuel filter.
Alternator needs bracket to support it, I used some of the old bracketry of of the old engine.
I fitted a raised air intake on mine, so a bit more pipework to sort.
It goes really well, I'm well happy with it.

cheers spyderman, whats it like on power increase over the 2.25?? i just found a topic on the lro forum on this aswel. the vehicle it will go in is a petrol atm, so i think there may be a few more modifications, such as fuel lines and throttle linkages. is it ok to send me a pick of the new o/s mount and your throttle linkage??

I had a problem with the battery tray fouling the alternator when I was fitting a Transit engine into my SIII. so the obvious thing was to cut the tray off and relocate the battery under the passenger seat, but what I did in the end was to stiffen up the remaining three legs and make a strengthened battery tray which bolts to the remaining three legs. The removable battery tray made it possible to get the engine in and also makes it easy to service the alternator. What tipped the balance for me was that the battery tray also supports the oil bath filter which is handy. I wander if that would work with the 2.5 Land-Rover engine?

I had a defender with a 2.5 nopn turbo engine and now have a series with a rebuilt 2.25 diesil in it and I can catogarically say that the 2.25 is a lot slower, less responsive and doesnt have the power of the 2.5 engine. I base this on my driving of both types of vehiclres as opposed to any performance stats. Hope this helps. Oh, and for the record I really wish I had fitted a 200tdi!
 
I want to fit mine with a 200TDI, However i will have to either pay loads for one that has been taken out or Buy a whole Vehicle.. The whole vehicle will work out cheaper but i have no where to break one up :(
 
i think i have decided that i am going to drop in a 2.5 TD out of an early depender. the power seems alright, and i dont think it should damage any of the drive train. what are your thoughts?
 
Turbo isn't the main problem, it is the extra stress it puts on the engine which causes the engine to fail, commonly cylinder block cracking. Never had a 2.5 TD though, only from what I have read.
