Hi Guys, I have a problem starting my 1999 Diesel Range Rover.

It was running great but recently became hard to start, until now it dead - not firing - nothing. I have checked obvious like Immobilization code, glow plug relay, wiring, fuses, fuel pump and supply to pump etc but no joy. I opened a injector pipe to check fuel pressure but no fuel came out when engine cranked over; I was experiencing poor mpg, and purchased the tools to re-time the pump to allow for timing chain slack (156k miles) but didn't get round to doing the job.

I read on here some time ago about an issue where timing solenoid electro magnet modulator things fails or sticks due to timing correction. Is this correct and can anyone shed any light on the issue, and can it be fixed or swapped?

On cranking the engine over in a short burst then releasing key, you can hear a fast clicking sound from ontop of the FIP. I have uploaded the video youtube: Range Rover P38 2.5 DSE FIP fault - engine not start - YouTube

I have the Nancom Evo and plugged in - but no faults present in EDC ECU, BECM etc.

Hope someone can help get it sorted.

Check the various functions with your Nanocom. Timing solenoid, ELAB, Etc. You should be able to hear or feel both working as they are tested. Check function of in tank pump for fuel flow. Check that the EMS code in the ECM matches the one stored in the BECM. If not ECM and BECM are out of sync. Timing solenoid not working will cause bad running but should not cause engine not to start. ELAB (stop solenoid) malfunction will stop engine from starting.

Hi thanks, I will check these out later today.

Hi i have a Range Rover P38 im locked out of the vehicle, i got the EKA code and got into the vehicle a few time over the last week while i was waiting for the spare key to arrive.
Now i have the spare key the doors will still not open and when i try and put the EKA code in the indicator lights are not even flashing now so i think the batt is dead so all the doors are dead locked and cant get into the car do you know what i can do iv spoke to range rover and they think it might be the latch in the drivers door but that's going to cost me £170 which id rather get around that if possible.

You can recharge the battery by connecting to the big wire on the starter motor and the chassis.:)

....................... ELAB (stop solenoid) malfunction will stop engine from starting.

I've had the Nanocom Evo on tonight.

EMS code matches.

Tested timing solenoid and it ticks on & off for approx 30 secs

Tested ELAB but no visible click or sound heard when activated. Tried a positive feed to ELAB and it clicks ok. I tested wiring from ecu to ELAB & no short. Rave Manual states ELAB disabled in the event of internal fault but no codes showing?

Any ideas?

Only time ELAB will be disabled is if there is a complete fail of fuel quantity servo which may cause a runaway. It is this that controls fuelling and actually stops engine. Elab is just a back up. If there are no codes showing you could try a live feed to it and see if engine fires up, but be prepared to disconnect it PDQ if needed, that may then throw a code. Maybe ECU or pump. If it was pump you would normally get a fuel quantity fault.

Ok. I put 12v feed to Elab. You can hear it click on and also hear a relay click in ECU.

I tried turning over but still no hint of starting. I checked code just & it's says Elab Valve

But surely I just caused that by bypasing wiring?

My battery flat now - so off for recharging.

Disconnect feed from ECU first. Then try it. But be ready to disconnect it pronto.
