I have a 2.5 dse and wondering how much better if any is the td6 in respect to fuel consumption power and overall reliability as there dosent seem to be many post on here about the td6 and also has it a different autobox fitted?

Well with 3 litres 24 valves and 174 BHP as opposed to 2.5 litres 12 valves and 136 BHP i am sure it should be better. You can chip a 2.5 to about 165/175 BHP depending on the chip but it does have it's drawbacks. You would be punishing it at that in a big vehicle. Specially if it's done a few miles.

i know nothing about either, but having heard many times how gutless the 2.5 rangie is and seen how many td6's come tanking passed me on the motorway, I wud say td6 is much better.

Td6 is a good engine, mines chipped and it goes pretty well. I average about 22MPG around town. Average is 21-25 on a good day. I've heard some get 30mpg out of their td6, don't know how tho! Lol

Sadly the gear boxes in the td6's are weak and they fail every 60-90k miles and a recon box won't stop it failing again in the future.

Still well worth there problems :)

I have driven my dse for about 30 000 miles and have not had any major problems and if it is is a bit underpowered there is always low ratio for any tricky off road situations and i was getting between 25 and 30 mpg but not much town work with that but quite a few dirt tracks and mountain passes through Europe.
avoided tollways as well I would be more concerned with the fuel economy and reliability as i when i use the vehicle i will do high mileages and will possibly be taking it across Russia and Mongolia next trip.
If i keep this one I will renew the airbags and overhaul compressor before I set off as well as regular maintenance.

My P38 averages 24mpg brim to brim, my Dutch friends L322 Td6 turns in about......wait for it........ 24mpg! But is much quicker. If you use the power it does gulp more than the P38 though.

LRO did an article on the Simtec conversion from V8 auto to V6 diesel with the same auto box. It was a lot better on fuel and power. The D3 and RR sport are a lot heavier than the p38 and it was returning about 30+ mpg. Had i known about this 18months ago then i would proberbly done this same conversion. I,ll try and find the issue it was in, this was swapping a petrol to a diesel. Bazz.

I assume you mean this: Linkage.

Interesting article, very tempted by the idea.

I love the idea of the engine, its a gem of an engine too but I really don't like the chassis mods to take the D3 engine mounts. They've just about halved the strength of the chassis rails. I know there isn't much going on forward of the strut mount but its still responsible for chassis stiffness.

How would you fare wit insurance in a crash afterwards?

A nice idea but I would imagine beyond the scope of the average DIYer making the cost somewhat prohibitive. The engine alone must cost a fortune. You would have to keep your P38 for many years to get some sort of return on your investment.

One of my in-laws works for Jaguar and I asked weather they had an engine laying around, you never know he might come through for me! ;-)
