Hi everyone
thought I would ask the experts which discovery I should buy to pull my caravan.
My own choice would be the Td5 2.5 ES.
I have seen an 03 at a local dealers priced up at £10995 with 70+ on the clock.
The question I ask myself is the extra money worth it for the extra refinements you get.
Any help or advise would be appreciated....thanks

I agree with listerdiesel above, although not a high mileage it's still average ie. 10k a year. If the dealer is a main LR dealer then you can expect to pay a £1000+ over the top, but then they only have very clean one owner vehicles on the forecourt, there is also your one year LR warranty included in the price, another £1000 so any problems just return the vehicle and if it's covered by the warranty it's fixed.

So if it's as new unmarked do a deal and offer a bit less..Good Luck :D

thankyou for the comments.
After taking a long forgotton friend to the garage today (quite a lot of experience with disco's) he dismissed the 03 and turned my attentions to a 52 plate GS with 49000 miles one owner and FSH.
Took it out for a spin and had it up on the ramp and at £10000 it seems a dead cert its really nice n tidy.
So it looks like I am going to buy this one.
Its quite exciting and opens up a whole new driving experience for the family.
Of course if I had the money I would be looking at the new 4 series but for now its a great starting point.
The other great news is the friend who I took with me today is an ex landrover mechanic and has offered to keep it in tip top condition.....sweet.
Thanks again for your input I will let you know how it all turns out...hmmmm I wonder how long it will be before I am spitting feathers over fuel consumption and parts prices...lol

Hi
Just to give you an idea on prices. I bought my facelifted 52reg Td5 XS with 70k on the clock with a full service history for £10500 THREE years ago.
So the prices that you are looking at are far to much, Yes I did get a good buy but I think top end you should be looking at no more than £8k now.
Cheers
Graeme

as others have said that is a lot of money,i would expect it to be a max £8500 from a garage and less if its a private sale..i would search around a bit more its a buyers market at the mo and if you have cash in the sky rocket you can have the pick of the bunch

Hi Barn door, please think again, that is a HUGE amount of money to pay for 7yr old car !!!!!!!!!

Just as an example I recently bought a Jan 2005 TD5 ES Premium (much higher spec than a GS) auto with 95,000mls (so more miles than the car you are looking at) with full excellent documented service history.

And I paid?............................................£2000, yes £2000 - not £2000 deposit, but £2000 in total.

She is now called Françoise and drives absolutely beautifully. I bought her privately not from a dealer, but I worked on the basis that I've saved soooooooooh much that IF anything goes wrong (and nothing has in the 5000 mls I've done in her) there is money left over to sort it out.

There will always be things to do on a second-hand Discovery, no matter where you buy it from, so buy wisely and have a budget for rectification work, that would be my advice.

Incidently parts prices are not bad, unless you buy them directly from Land Rover - then expect to get turned over good and proper !!!

Fuel consumption various widely depending on use but I get about 28-30mpg from my auto.

Don't spend too much money on a Discovery, you really don't need to nowadays.

Well that sounds a bit better. Now what you need to do is to examine the paperwork minutely. Look through the service history and the receipts to make sure everything ties up mileage wise.

Remember that the value of the vehicle is VERY dependant on how well it's been looked after, hence the paperwork comment. If it doesn't have reciepts as well as a stamped-up service book you don't know if the stamps are valid - anyone can buy a stamp kit nowadays.

Then check the vehicle. Remember that a pursuit is a relatively low-rent spec.

The message really is "take your time, learn about the car and it's options, drive loads of them so you get a good idea of how they should run".

There are bargains to be had, it just takes a little effort and some patience.

Mind you, if you can't be ârsed to be patient, just buy something....................................................;)

I have to admit that I like to get things done and also I have to retrieve my caravan from devon which I had to leave there due to my vectra stuggling on the way down with the weight of the van.
I have to say you have already saved me two grand and found a car two years younger by taking your advise so I am noting very carefully all your comments so thanks again

Hi there Barndoor, here's something that doesn't look too bad.

LANDROVER DISCOVERY TD5 'S' 2002 (52) SILVER 56K on eBay (end time 14-Sep-09 11:40:33 BST)

Make them an offer of say £6000, they can only say no, but they might just say yes. You don't know how keen they are to sell unless you try?

gosh u r being really helpfull thankyou so much
i am hoping that the 04 plate will be ok on inspection and I am also hoping I can knock down the price some more as cash is king and I am no longer rushing thanks to your good self
