Hello, I’m hoping this is not something to drastic.
From a cold start the 300tdi struggles to fire even if I prime the glow plugs a few times, once she is started the engine wont rev above 1500 and the smoke screen is produced. The smoke I think is gray or light blue and has no diesel smell. During this time the engine seems to be retarded like there is some sort of timing issue. After 30 seconds she will rev and spool the turbo, the smoke thins out, once warm under hard acceleration there is no smoke produced however for the first 15 min whilst driving normally there is the occasional cloud of smoke but this can be in any gear (not whilst changing gear or pressing the clutch) with the turbo spooled or not. not whilst standing in traffic:confused:

The engine oil is clean no emulation effect or water in the oil, there is no pressure in the header tank or water system. Just changed aux and cam belt and clutch but the issues was there before this was done.

Assuming that you have replaced all the filters and cleaned the fuel sedimenter, the first place I would start is the glowplug circuit.

You will need to take out each plug inturn and see if it glows red immediately - if it doesn't it's a dud and needs replacing.

However, if none of them do this, there may be an issue with electrical supply to the 4, so you'll need to check the relay and general supply.

Cheers
Dave

Sounds like a couple of the usual things ...

Injector Leak-off pipes likely to be cracked/split, just replace them. They let air into the system, especially after being stood overnight, and cause starting times to lengthen.
Fuel sender unit nylon bends cracked/split, replace sender unit as a whole. As above but also let air in during running so causing fuelling issues and possible smoke intermittently.
Possibly also fuel pipe connections at the fuel tank corroded and letting air in, replacement.
Turbo hoses de-laminating inside, the hoses from intercooler to turbo, replacement. It gets a 'flap' inside that sometimes falls down, blocks airflow, then moves again and lets full airflow through so again an intermittent symptom.

All easy to fix .. ;)

Might be worth a full service too as the sedimenter and fuel filter can also contribute to those symptoms and the air filter ... ;)

timing was done yesterday and confirmed corrrect, bloody pain this. mind you as its my runaround one person told me i was clogging up the environment.

My mate owns a garage i was with him when it was replaced. I trust him with all my vehicles and hes never let me down yet. I guess anything is possable though

what do the leekoff pipes look like?

what do the leekoff pipes look like?

Small, about 7mm diameter, cloth covered pipes running between injectors at the top of the engine.

Found this pic where they are called spill pipes .. ;)

I have this issue of startin after being at work all day. Fine at 3am when go work. Just struggles at about 2 when i finish fires on 3 cylinders and takes 20 odd seconds to start and get a grey smoke. Rev it and it is fine fires on 4.and no smoke. Is this likely to be the fuel pipes as i fitted a tank guard the other day and my tank support dropped a bit.on to a bar i put to hold it up.

which 1 would be cracked on sender unit

If you take the circular plate out from the boot floor you will see the top of the ssender unit, with three hoses coming into it. The moulded nylon bends from the unions to the sender crack .. they're usually easy to see 'cos they discolour brown ish.

The sedimenter is a known trouble spot, and can give these sorts of problems as a 'jelly' type growth appears from the bacteria present. It's on the right hand chassis rail near rear wheel, DON'T undo the drain plug, they usually break. An 11mm (I think) spanner undoes the bolt at the top of the unit (A beeatch to get to) so the whole unit comes off .. put a plastic bag over the body of the sedimenter so you don't get diesel all over your arms .. guess how I found that one out!

I drilled and tapped the hole where the plastic sedimenter drains. I then replaced it with a stainless steel bolt, with nylon washer...... I also replaced sender, fuel pipes, lift pump, leak off pipes. TBH it can still be a little slow to start 1st time in the day, after that its ok. It does always start tho and I've just accepted this as part of its "character"
