1996 P38 Diesel RR - Auto Gear Box Problem

Automatic Gear Box

After running with the hand break Partially on it got Hot and since then, i have been unable to engage into Low Range, the Sports mode will Not engage, the gear shift illumination flashes all the time and the on board information screen that contains mileage etc reads "Select Neutral" All the time unless in neutral.

Put it on a independent land rover garage diagnostics, they came up with nothing.

Any Idea's Please,

You could drain the oil and see if there are any tell tale signs of damage, discolouration etc.

When you were driving with the handbrake on I take it you didn't notice it was on, did the 'Gearbox Overheat' message flash up?

Have you checked inside the handbrake drum to see what's happened? There's quite a bit of wiring for the transfer box ratio motor in that area too, something may have burnt thru. Get underneath and have a look!

thanks for the fast reply, as far as i know, no message came up and no i didnt keep the handbrake on intentionaly.

it is hard for me to get the time to check everything u mentioned but keep the suggestions coming.

Do you mean the handbrake drum got hot? And how do you know this for sure?

Sounds like you have the transfer box ratio motor fault in some way, and it may or may not be related to the handbrake incident.

well i assumed it got hot, i dont know for sure, just a logical guess really,

Hey there,

Did you manage to solve this issue? Friend of mine has bought the P38 with same problem.
