Hi folks, first time posting on here. Hope someone can help. 1996 300tdi 110 CSW been stood for a couple of months so battery was dead ish so so charged it up and tried to start it. Nothing happened just a very faint click from left hand side of dashboard couldnt hear any mechanical type clicking from starter, could this be just a relay or something else. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Richy

Hi, maybe first thing to check is good connections to battery, starter and earth lead, check voltage of battery with multimeter or substitute with known good replacement (borrow one from someone) or try jump leads. put in gear and shunt backwards/forwards with ignition OFF in case starter stuck. Tap starter with hammer in case starter stuck. Pretty basic stuff, but worth a try.

Thanks

tried braying starter and solonoid with hammer, no good and battery ok so going to take starter off and clean leads etc when get time in the daylight. do you know if there is a relay in there somewhere or is that just on a td6

There is a wire with a spade connector that goes from ignition to starter. It's very common for it to fall off, when it does. NO feed to starter to tell it to spin over. Tis a bugger to get at anorl. Skinny hands are a must.

If all the connections are ok, take the starter off and try powering it from a battery, mine was stuck when I bought the defender after it had been sat about for a while, it freed off quite quickly with 3in1 oil and a bit of elbow grease.
