it just makes a grinding noise and I can hear something spinning under the car right in the middle. The higher the gear the fster it spins .... aand more noise coming out from it

I got under it and there is a box in middle (is it called transfer box?) and that is where the noise comming from. Has anyone had this promlem or chnaged one of these before? Would I be better with a recon box or I can strip it down and fix? Is it a big job?

Cheers

Or it could be the output shaft from the main gearbox. Happened to me. Snapped in two just where a roll pin goes through. Creates a weak spot and snapped right across the middle of the roll pin hole. I didn't have the confidence to rebuild a gearbox so had it rebuilt for me. Bloody disaster. Ended up getting an exchange unit from Ashcrofts a couple of years later which is what I should have done in the beginning. Hindsight and all that. It's also an extremely heavy lump to manoeuvre when you're flat on your back if you don't have access to a ramp etc.

both transfer box shafts dont spin! idoes it 100% mean its the chain? (thats what I though it was at 1st place) do I have to take the transfer box out to change it? is it possible to do it myself?

if you here a loud ratchet noice then that will be the chain slipping round the gears inside the transfer box, or get some one to sit in drivers seat and work clutch and put your hand on transfer box you will feel the vibration

i did mine my self, i removed the transfer box for fitting the chain, if you look at the RAVE manual you will see whats involved in doing the job, but remember the transfer box is VERY heavy you will NOT be able to lift it your self underneath the car you will need a trolly jack so taking that into account you will have to get the car high enough to clear the transfer box sitting on the trolly jack so you can slide it out

thanks. I dont think I would be able to get it in the air that hight ... How much do you think it would cost if I take it to the garage? I mean how many hours do you think it would take them if I had another working transfer box?

you would have to ask them for a quote to fit it for you but i would expect a garage to be able to do it in 4 hours and that should allow enough time for head scratching and cups of tea, someone else will be along in a couple of minutes to give you another estimate on time:)

Thank you all for your help!

The other thing I wanted to ask is the car is in a “low” mode at the minute. If I put it in a "high" mode and push the car, will it go up?

I reckon it's safer to drop it to the bump stops then put it on the ramps. If it's on the bump stops it can't drop any further when you are under it. You could put axle stands under the chassis but I think they get in the way.

I got my transfer box off tonight (94/95 2.5TD) ... I have also bought a transfer box of 96/97 4.0 L petrol engine and they look different.
The new box got finer tooth spline and the bit where the gearbox shaft goes in is a bit shorter :doh: why??
