Although the rear sidelights are working fine, the brake lights on my mums disco are not working.

Right I think, first check the bulbs (although its unlikely they will all go at the same time). Its a 7 seater and the only way I can see to get to the inspection panel is to take out the rear two sideways facing seats, or am I just being stupid and overlooking a far more simple way to do it?

If its not the bulbs, what else could it be? I assume there is a switch that the pedal hits, would this be a likely culprit?

Anything else?

It's painfull to get to the rear bulbs on a 7 seater i ended up with scratches over the of my hand. I loosen'd the seat bolts and pull the seat half forward to get better access then u can twist the bulb holder and remove or undo two nuts and remove the whole lamp unit from the rear of the car.

The stoplight switch as u say is mounted on the brake pedal bracket u can remove the electrical connector and short the connections out to see if the lights illuminate the u will know if there's any prob with the switch.
Don't forget to switch on the ignition.

If u have cruise control, the stop light switch is the higher mounted of the two switches and doesn't have a vacuum hose connection.

Check the fuses I had a brake light down and did all the necessary to find it was a fuse located under the right hand panel at the side of ignition. They have a separate fuse for both sides. Its easy to check
