Evening all,

I have bought a 1981 RR. I'm loving it. I do have a nasty transmission whine, though, and I'm wondering if anyone can put me in the right direction? It's the 4 gear box with overdrive.

Here are the characteristics....

  • Whines when clutch is not depressed and gear in neutral.

  • Whine increases with revs / speed.

  • Whine slows down after speed / revs have gone like something losing momentum i.e. you can still hear it slowing down after the noise of the engine has gone.

  • Is as noisy as the engine but much quieter in 4th.
I would be very grateful for your thoughts. Thank you.

James

if its quieter in 4th its the lay shaft bearings that are worn ,replace before layshaft and gears need replacing too quite an interesting box to do

i would be interested to know how you get on as ashcrofts dont do these anymore.

maybe james will do it for you :p

just a thought, have you checked the oil in it ? as they like to leak and people tend to forget about them

Hey Fett......I see you are also in South Hampshire. I'm gonna take it to Paul Light and see if he can do it for me. Know him?

not heard of him, where are you based mate?

PM me if you want list of local places that are best avoided in my opinion!
