WHAT IS THE REGULATIONS ON SEAT BELTS IN A 1971 LANDROVER?

I.VE BEEN DOING UP A 109 AND NOW GETTING NEAR TO MOT TIME, DO I NEED BELTS?

My '62 mini didnt need any back around '02, but I remember something about the law changing, so you might well need them now.
Someone will be along soon who knows.

If they are fitted, then they have to be in good condition.

If they weren't a legal requirement when built then no. Go to my font of all knowledge thread and click on the link to the online MOT testers Manual. the asnwer is in there. If it int, then it's not a testable item.

From memory, from 1965 C&U regs meant that seat-belts had to be fitted in all new cars.
I think that there was a while that Land-roveres escaped being classed as a commercial vehicle, but by the time the SIII came along, pretty sure they were standard fit, and the regs said if fitted as standard, they gotta be there.
Devils in the detail, and there's possibly ways to avoid HAVING to fit them, but, why not have them?

Its more to do with what needs to be fitted rather than not fit them! Eventually i would like harnesses, but the pound being week in my POCKET just wondered what would survice. Lap belts???

with 4 or more wheels first used on or after 1 January 1965 (see below)

A. vehicles first used before 1 April 1981: A belt which restrains the upper part of the body (but need not include a lap belt) for each seat

B. Vehicles first used after 31 March 1981: A 3 point (lap/diagonal) belt for each of these seats

this is taken from an online tester manual so should be cool

I have a couple of 4-point (atachment) Rally harnesses knocking about; spent about a year in the back of my 109. In good nick, blue webbing......... interested?

The middle seat at the rear must not count then, mi 02 punto has a lap belt in't middle.

There's an express 'exemption' for 'middle' seats, intending the one in the middle of a back seat, where there was no convenient bit of frame work to hang a diagonal, allowing a lap-strap, right up until the late 90's.
Actual letter of the law, didn't destinguish between middle seats in front or back, and I think up until the mid eighties, and fitment of rear seat-belts became compulsary, they tightened that one up so that all forward facing seats had to have a strap, but centre ones could still be lap-straps.
Again, though, think theres something about if fitted as standard, becouse they were fitting straps to the centre seats in both Landies and Transits in the late 70's.......
