Hello to you all.
As I have not had a Landrover since I had a 20 year old one in about 1985 (which may have been a series 11 SWB) I thought it would be a good idead to join a forum. So here I am.
I have just this minute had my 2000 Freelander 1 delivered by transporter.
I have only one key (absolutely typical) and of course the remote key fob two button presumably has a flat battery as it does not work.
So I have tried a search in the forum and online and sorry to say found no results but that's probably just me. Thing is I am not 100% sure about fitting a new battery. I have seen how to split the fob (I think) on an MG video but then I don't fully know what to do.

Once you've put you're new battery in it may not open the doors. If not you have to synconise the fob to the ecu by pressing the lock unlock buttons several times until the re sync has been done.

Welcome.
Put your thumb nails in the gap half way up the side with nails up, push the bottom half with your thumbs and it will pop open.
Simple
Mike
Thanks. So it is the same as for an MG etc.

This is the bit I wondered about thanks. I was a bit worried that if the battery has been dead a while it might need more fiddling.

Cheers. I'll have a bash in the morning.
Is the actual key coded. Being a 2000 model I wondered if I can just get another key cut for the ignition.

New battery in key fob and lock button works wahay.
However, is it by any chance normal that the unlock only unlocks the driver's door cos it doesn't make seem sensible? It seems to me that the central locking module may have a fault or could it be in the doors. Arghhhhh, I am at it already and not had it a day!:eek:

Try pressing the unlock button twice.

Hi John. Nice to see you over here!!
A 2000 Freelander should have a transponder in the key itself. This means that it is coded to the immobiliser ECU. The remote locking fob is also coded to the vehicle so that needs to be matched;)
Make sure that you do the one wheel up test to assess the condition of the VCU. On a Freelander, that is a priority and then change the auto box fluid which is the second most important transmission peculiarity!
Speak soon.

That's normal John, although pointless on the 3 door.
Every Freelander I've ever had has driver only door active. It can be changed by someone with the correct diagnostic equipment. Making mine unlock all doors together is on my "to do" list.

Hello John.
Yes after 30 years of Japanese 4x4s it is a big change but worry not I still have my two Mitsy ones. lol;)
I saw the one wheel up test - I'll get to it pretty soon but have some incidentals to attend to first and weather. I was going to paint the props either side of the VCU to see if there is displacement but as this motor is not going on the road for a few weeks it'll have to be the wheel test. :)
If it is a keeper the I want to add a 2" lift. That is a few months away though. First things first eh!

Hi John. Definitely do the one wheel up test. Painting marks on the props to see if the position changes is worthless as a test. The props will always move in relation to each other, regardless of how stiff the VCU has become. It's the increased stiffening with age/ mileage that eventually causes catastrophic IRD failure.
Some pictures of your new ride would be good;)

John.
Whilst on key fob subject. Now that you've got a new battery, a tip for the future. My '55' plate TD4 beeped at me when ever I got in to it. I hadn't realised that it was trying to tell me that the fob battery was failing. A new fob battery stopped the beeping.

The key has the transponder so if you to get another key cut it won't start the car. Not unless you take the transponder out and stick it to the steering column. ;)
Doesn't sort out the fob but gives you the option of a second key.

If I get another remote central locking fob (it's the 17TN) can I get it to communicate with the car by myself or do I have to get it done by a locksmith.

hi mate

u will have to get it programmed by a locksmith , test book at ur dealer, or someone with a hawkeye

need to tell the car to accept the remote ,

alternatively there are web sites where they send u a small box that u plug into ur diagnostic socket, then once programmed u send that bit back for a refund

can't for the life of me remember the site though, hopefully someone will be along with the link

if u ever want a spare key that can only be ordered from a main dealer , that has to be programmed as well

a locksmith is considerably cheaper than the dealers , or a member with a hawkeye

where about in the uk are u
