16" wheels & 5mm Spacers

Hi Guys & Galls,
Not sure if I have the correct wheels on my 2003 Td4 Freelander, as in the correct one's for the year..
I think maybe mine should have the dimples in the face between the wheel bolt holes???

Not my wheel but the ones I have fitted..


How can you tell if you have early pre 2001 wheels or the larger 2001 onward wheels??
are there any markings on the inside of them??
are the part numbers the same??
are the makers the same??

So I am going to get 4x 5mm spacers as I have a sneaky feeling I may need them,
It makes sense to have some to hand if they are required,

Are these OK??

Anyway should I when fitting the spacers smear the faces back and front with copper ease or similar??
and will the standard wheel bolts be long enough with 5 mm spacers fitted??

Later and earlier wheels had different part no's. I ended up just buying, triple sport 16" off a V6 model, as they have the larger brakes. But as I have spacers now, any will fit mine. Would of done a swap if you were closer.

I would only use hubcentric spacers. But if you use them, would be better to get studs that are 5mm longer, and only put copper slip between wheel and spacer.

As you can see from the picture above as well as having the dimples between the bolt holes, there is a number embossed onto them, in this case a 10 (TDC), now I am not sure yet about the significance of the number, but I believe that if there is any number between the bolt holes then they are designed for the later larger braked Freelander's and therefore fit all years,
No number embossed and no dimple is for pre 2001 only..

Anyone have anything to add to this or maybe I have got it completely wrong, and if I have please shout as well..

Interesting theory.

I have two sets of wheels. Both have dimples between the stud holes but only one set also has the number - 10 in my case too.

That number is the locking wheel code, if I remember correctly.

If it is there are not many combinations out there,

Most I have been looking at are either 10 or 12..
must be more locking wheel combinations than that??

Not too sure about this.
My 2002 wheels don't have dimples or numbers, don't think there is any spacers fitted either.
I was also given a sixth wheel which from the front looks identical, however the rear moulding of the wheel is different, not tried it yet to see if it fits

What's the rear moulding look like on them both then??

I get some pics in the morning / along with the part numbers on the rear

if i am not wrong the spokes on the wheel that have indentations are 15inch they are for the earlier freelander

The pics show a Freedom 5-spoke wheel.

I had them on my 2002 Freelander - 16"

They also come 6-spoke in 17"

I don't know if they were ever made in 15" or not.

The post 2001 16" (for the bigger calipers) are LR Part Nr. RRC114780MNH

The number is cast on the back.

No way can the 10 refer to the locking key number.

It's just coincidence if you have a wheel with a #10 and also have a locking hut #10

I'm not going to post here how many different key codes there are - but they all fit any wheel. It wouldn't make sense to have the code on the wheel - but then lots of LR things don't make sense.

They are the ones it came with after several owners and 10 years,
so I am just trying to make sure they are the right ones,,

The reason I am asking is that it seems that almost all the items that could
be taken off and sole separately were..

ie,
steel spare wheel
Missing interior bits,

all replaced now though...

Ha ha, admission time - I did swop my 16's for 17's way back

And The Answer Is,,

Simple..

PART - RRC114780MNH
16x7
LAND ROVER FREELANDER

5 ROUND SPOKE ALLOY
SILVER

Both wheels have the same PCD and the same offset,
so the difference is the J rating, (Wheel Width)..
Pre 2001 = 6j
Post 2001 = 7j

So this is why a 5mm spacer is required to fit the earlier wheels to the later big brake models...

There is still the possibility of a crossover point causing further confusion, unless someone knows the exact date of the swap to the larger brakes??

Nice one! There were many changes for the 2001 model year, so called "series 2". Some are well documented, others not at all. This should clear things up for you wheel swopping loonies

My freelander is fitted with 16" x6J wheel RRC0029600XXX - however I was given a sixth wheel RTC112310XXX - both appear identical on the front face, but the rear os the wheels are total different

Any ideas - I assume that I should not mix and match the two different wheel types.

(Hope the pictures work as this is the first time I've tried to insert pictures)

The rear view of the wheel on the left is same as mine on 53 plate with upgraded brakes. The one of the right looks to have concave center which wouldn't sit right on my hubs. I cannot find a picture at the moment to help further. I think you can make the wrong one fit but it will be stressing the hub and wheel as it has a gap behind where the bolts tighten.

No the centres were the bolts go thou is flat, and would not cause a problem, it is actually a landrover wheel but I cannot determine from which vehicle / age since it does not match the others.
