Ok, ive just bought another project after being encapsulated in 90truckcab's rebuild thread.
Im hoping someone out there knows a thing of or two about the sherpa engines because this thing has one fitted, it looks the same as a 2.5 N.A 12J (early defender) engine, but with a tin cover over the cam belt.
Im after the bigend shells(ERC 8841) STD size, precombustion chambers and cambelt, are the parts the same as a 12J????
also any info on this engine is apreciated 'cos ive never seen one before:)
Thanks!.

Hi yes it is the same as a landy engine, the cam belt is shorter as the pump is mounted lower but all else should fit

Hi,
I use this engine, I have just ordered a cambelt this morning from Engine Parts this morning. Search the forum for timing details, theres a good post about it that dates back to about 2006

I've got one of these in my lightweight, having real problems trying to locate a supplier of injector pipes .... seems that there are some particular differences from the 12J.

Anyone know of a supplier??

Does anyone know if there is a company who can custom make them???

The injector pipes are different (because the pump is in a different place). I believe the LR pipes can be bent to fit, but that info came from a garage that mainly dealt with trucks, so were perhaps more used to that sort of thing.

ah see, i saw one being rebuilt so i had to have one :), now youve given in to the charm !

ther a half decent engine, but as above some bits are hard to get , the link above is good fer parts , i'v used thm before,

they are a favorite overe hear in rebuilt landrovers of a certain time, every one was dropping a sherpa engine in,

am more the 2.25 fan me self, ;) hope to see your pics

I believe the landy version is similar apart from the diffo's mentioned and the facrt that the landy version has a sealed cam belt housing.
I come accross the smaller 1500 version a lot and its deffo a workhorse.

Are you saying there was a 1500cc version of the Land-Rover derived Sherpa 2.5 diesel engine?

What I've been wandering is whether a 200Tdi would go into an old Rover P4 80 without too much butchery - because they were fitted with the Land-Rover 2 1/4 petrol engine.

Hi Fenners,
I read your question a few times but my simple brain doesnt get it.
The 2.5 diesel engine in the series is available in marine form its called a 'commadore' engine and as you'd guess its a 2.5 litre, the next one down in the range is called a 'captain' and is 1500, I believe the 1500 went in morris oxfords, I know this cause when I buy a headset it says oxford on the packet, both engines are from the same range, the 2.5l fits on the 1.5 box at least in the marine application, however the mounts are diffo and the 2.5 is quite a bit bigger, the 1500 looks very much like a mini a series engine, even down to the injector pump which sticks out like the mini dizzy does.

The 200tdi goes on the series landy box as you well know from experience with a couple of mods, the series landy box therefore fits the 2.5 series diesel and the 200tdi diesel, so it would make sense that the 200tdi would go in a p4, the mounts might not fit.

Did they do a p4 diesel, I know there was a couple of kits to put a perky in a p6, if the p4 had the landy type 2.5 diesel then the 200tdi would fit easily, the same as a series landy 200di conversion I'dve thought.

I'm allready wearing my coat, its a high vis.

The 1500 is the old BMC B Series (the Mini was the A Series), both Austin engines starting life in the 50's, so contemporary of the Land Rover 4 cylinder, but at that time Rover were totally independent, so there is no link between the engines, although both reflect the technology of the same period.

Well I didnt know that, the bmc 1500 is a b series yes, I wonder if its similar to the mgb thats sposed to be a b series.
2.5's go on the same 'box as the 1500 I've seen it done, I wonder if thats on later design engines, or there was some connection between the 2 even though they were independant, bmc might have made their engines compatible to the same drive as rover to make their products a competitive alternative.

I don't know much about marine engines - I was just wandering if you were saying that a 3 cyl 1500cc marine variant of the Land-Rover engine had been produced, because I've heard that a 6 cyl engine was developed in either Spain or South Africa based on the 4 cyl 2286cc Land-Rover engine.

Yep, the MGB 1800 was a B Series.
Don't know about gearboxes though, it sounds very unlikely that they would just bolt on without some sort of adaptor plate. I've heard of an MGB engine in a LR (Series One I think) bit no idea how they did it.

That makes sense, after all a marine gearbox is just forward & reverse. Do they have a clutch?

The 1500 is actually a 4 pot.
And yep I spose all marine motors of the time might have had the same gearbox mounts, and the adaptor plate fitted to the engine was specific to the engine but fitted more than one type of box, makes sense too.
Marine box's now dont have clutches as such, theres just a plate bolted to the flywheel taking drive through a shaft direct to the 'box, zf are the best and are basically a crash box, earlier ones such as the tmp do have a clutch but nothing like a flywheel mounted clutch, its a brake band around a epicyclic gearcluster, rather similar to an auto box, they tend to be very reliable, the only issues are with the hydraulically operated shifters.

Hi,

The P3/P4 engines were normally 6 pots, so would have same gear box front end as S1 Land Rovers, as did the Rover 60.

Rover 80? Now there is a thought. At worst, you might have to change gearbox to LR clutch cover.

Hmmmm.
