tempted by two ex utilities 110's one is a 98 R reg at £2600 and a 2000 X at £3600 both have 140,000 miles.

Which is better to go for ? the R reg tdi tempts me because it's cheaper, but is the td5 worth the extra money?

So your saying the tdi? or just no completely?

The tdi without a doubt. They are generally regarded as one of the best land rover engines you'll ever be able to get your hands on. 140,000 miles is just about run in, so there's no need to worry about things like engine wear, especially considering it's ex-mod, which means it will have been well looked after. The chassis should also be Heavy Duty (ie. thicker steel) so you're getting a good buy, especially at that price. The TD5's although more powerful, are more troublesome and have a lot more to go wrong electronics wise. The later 300 tdi's (if it is a 300 not a 200) had a fly by wire accelerator peddle, but I'd imagine the MOD sticking to the simpler throttle cable system. Have a good look. If it's a 200tdi, that's even better still!

Utility companies are not supplied the same vehicles as the Military. It will still be a standard spec Landy.

Go for the 300. good price that, does it include VAT?

TD5 just because the Luddites will go ape. :D

Sounds better, more cylinders, more power, more torque, more speed, more tunable, more everything which equals more fun. :)

Ultimately its up to you.

In that case go for a V8.......

Sounds better, more cylinders, more power, more torque, more speed, more tunable, more fuel, more everything which equals more fun. :p :D

Driven TD5 and V8, current drive is 110 300Tdi. I think the TD5 is more on road biased engine. Off road and at low revs seems to lack grunt.
V8 sounds and drives awsome, if you can afford the fuel or LPG it.
I use my 300 Tdi as daily driver just about to clock up 150k, so nicely bedded in. Routine servicing can be carried out by a reasonably competant DIY'er and I get between 25 and 28 mpg urban. It's not all about BHP either gearing and torque are also big factors. I find the 300 more tractable at low speed than the TD5 especially off road.
At the end of the day its a personal choice, I would recommed drivin em all before settling on one.

thanks for the advice, still looking to find something tidy and affordable
