79 onwards where the 17 digit VIN numbers, but there was a short time that they used a 14 digit VIN number. And I was looking why they used the 17 digit without the first three digits (SAL).

Did you test yout links? They don't give information about a 14 character VIN number.

according to my book 14 digits used LBAAH1AA100001 from nov 79 onwards,give us number apart from last 5 tell you what it is

Yes on the first link it tells you about the numbering, TBH i did not read it fully.
The other 2 link will let you put in your number and it will tell you about it. I put in my 14 digit numbers and it said it wanted 17 digits. I then just pul SAL infront and it came up with all the info, Looks about right for mine.
Ik think we don't understand each other, probably it me being Dutch.

I have here a 1982 Land Rover Series III with chassisnumber LBAetc This is on the VIN plate, on the V5 form and stamped in the chassis. Normally there should be SAL in front of this number. Why did Land Rover used these numbers without SAL for some time?

Ok i get you now, thats the same arangement as mine too(not the same numbers) mine do not have SAL infront either.

sal didnt come in for series and not all rr till later at least in info in parts books from time
