Hi. I have a 2004 TD4 which has a towbar and trailer electrics but I want to fit the grey 12S electrics so I can tow a caravan.
I think the part I need is STC50459. Anyone know if this will be suitable for my LHD vehicle and if anybody has fitted it before, is it a complex job, any tips?
Thanks in advance.

You can tow a caravan with a single plug, you just won't have leisure battery being charged off car. If your batteries ok on caravan you can have fridge on battery while you travel. Black plug is just your lights

Being in Spain, the caravan needs reversing lights, which earth through the 12S socket so I need to fit it. Caravan also needs an MOT.

If I was you I would not “add” another socket, rather change it to the 13 pin socket.
This then gives you ability to run fridge/charge caravan batteries, also gives you provision for reverse lights. (If fitted to caravan)
Not sure but would be pretty certain a car of that age has a multi plug to plug harness into to cope with 13pin. Should make no diff LHD/RHD to the car only where the lights are on the caravan/trailer.

Don’t ask why but am sort of going through the reverse of this;) C0B56E2A-35D6-46E2-B8AE-2478FC38BC37.jpeg just got to get some cable and work out a good place for junction box.

Car is Spanish, caravan is English, arriving in Spain tomorrow. It already has the black and grey plugs on it and I have fitted reversing lights in preparation for the Spanish MOT.
To change to 13 pin, is it a question of combining the black and grey cables into one 13 pin plug?

Same here UK trailer. We have 13 pin on car. But trailer has both plugs. Have adapter to get over that (for now).
If you have to change anything,my advice is update car to 13 pin. Then use a crossover and work on trailer later.
Yes same rules here for trailer including mot, and all sorts of sh**e over chassis numbers. Have you got the fog light changed to the correct side?
I cheated and we now have 2, 1 each side.

Caravan already has fog lights on both sides. I also tow a trailer with single black electrics so thought it might be easier to just fit the grey 12S so I can tow either caravan or trailer.
It appears that the fun is about to start. Because the caravan is old, 1996, it did not need European type approval, but the guy at the ITV station says it must have it or I will need individual type approval which doesn't look like being cheap!

The other half feels your pain.
Having gone through the same sh**e and spent whole day, at TIAT & KAT. ( Iva from TIAT & reg at KAT)
But don’t let them say you can’t do it. Just make sure you sit on their doorstep and park in such a way that you sort of get in the way. Then sit there and brew your tea:)

The UK has a lot to learn on trailer reg.
In the end I think they used some of the welded numbers from chassis ( manufacture date) as part of the new number on our paperwork.
Make sure you have copies of any/all paperwork and take pics of any you are given (sometimes it might go missing:cool:).

But to get back to your OP I would still recommend change car to 13 pin.
We wish you luck and take a huge bucket of “patience “ with you.

Going to a 13 pin plug doesn’t overcome the issue of getting the correct feeds at the rear of the car for the battery live, ignition feed etc needed for all functions to work in the plug.

Google search the part number and it should find the fitting instructions for the genuine LR kit - relatively easy to do with a basic level of competence

The fitting instructions show the 12s loom running down the passenger/left hand side of a RHD car. Will I need to reverse that and run the loom down the right hand side of a LHD car?

Normal trailer plug is on RHS so I need to run it down the LHS. Looked again at the instructions and it will only go one way.
