Got a problem with a 1986 110 with a 200tdi in it. Every now and then keep getting massive shakes from the front end. Speed dosnt seem to cause it as its happend at 20mph and 60mph. From what we can tell is a bump will start it off and then it feels like the front end is falling apart and normaly lasts for a few seconds.

Any ideas? and is it easy to fix?

Is the suspension, shocks etc standard or has it been lifted or modified? When did the problem start? Have you done any work on it? Have you ragged it off road and maybe bent something? Does the steering wheel wobble as well?.... Dont do 60 till its fixed:)

could be the same as the well known disco death shake, this is caused by play in the swivel bearings.
worth checking the preload on the swivels before buying any parts you may not need.
if it checks out fine than great you can start ticking things off like steering damper, drop arm ball joint, wheel balance, suspension bushes, etc.

ok Check:

Front Radius arm bushes axle mounts and chassis mounts.

Panhard rod bushes chassis and axle mounts,

Change the steering damper once thats all good then think about swivel preload. Until you get everything A1 it cannot be narrowed down.

DO check all mounts on chassis and axles as they have been known to rust, fall apart and fail.

It sounds as if your phanard rod bushes are fecked and steering damper worn but don't discount a fecked wheel bearings all can have similarish symptoms with either a combination of worn failed parts or a combination of the above.

The shocks are only a month or so old and at standard. Think the problem started just before xmas after we had a new water pump fitted :s. It hasnt been used off road in the past year but the people who had it before used it on a farm and before that was used on a beach by some surfers. Aye the steering wheel wobbles when it happens, seems like a bump will set the whole thing off.

Had a look at the steering damper, looks old and worn so went and picked up a new one today so i will see if that makes any differece

Put a new steering damper in as the old one has seen better days but it hasnt made much of a difference. Going to take it up to the garage on monday but there not too keen on landys so dunno what they will find.

If i upload some pics of the steering system would that help?

Also if it is the radius arms how much cash am i looking at to buy 2 new ones, and how hard are they to replace.

Cheers

it's only the bushes that need changing **** easy job if you've got a 30mm socket. to get the arms off in the first place. Have search thru me posts I've put a thread up somewhere detailing the simple way to get the axle end bushes out.

Ill have a look at the bushes in the morning and see what condition they are in. If there anything like Bushes that where on the shockers and steering damper dosnt look like they have been changed since it was taken out the RAF in the 90s :/

So do Poly bushes really make a difference then? Any chance you can buy a kit with all the bushes for radius arms?

personally I would press genuine rubber ones in. Few reasons, I'm not convinced polybushes are all that after having some. Rubber ones out lasted the polys, they are most certainly softer and I genuinly believe they allow alot more flex when offroading. Even the "soft" versions.

If you haven't got access to a polys are easier to fit. Mine wore out in 5 months to a really sloppy horrible drive. Never again. I will never fit them again!

Think im going to go pick some rubber bushes up from town in the morning and slap them in. Will probs replace them all round as they all look like they have seen better days.

Iv seen people using a vice to press new bushes in? Is This a good way to do it or is there risk of damage?

That's fine other way is a long bolt thick washers and tighten the nut up to draw the bush in.
