Howdy, I run a small film production company and we are looking to convert a 110 for our purposes, I know its a long shot but does anyone have any experience with converting a 110 Hardtop into a TV/Film Production Vehicle? I know the BBC have had some similar vehicles over the years.
Looking for advice on suspension upgrades, engine choice and general advice on converting 110's to specialist uses.

Please don't point me in the way of a professional converter as this is something I am doing with an older landy as a proof of concept way before building out one new.

Also looking for said 110 to convert, preferably in Ireland or Northern Ireland.
Cheers in advance

Jay

There is some but from memory it was stupid prices like £500K, when we had a pilot for channel 4 they had 2x 1million quid trucks there editing and filming recording everything. Sugest rebuild from ground up for sound proofing serious engine driven generator and HD springs and helpers. I do not think you will get everything under the MAM of a 110 even of you tried so good luck

Yeah I am aware of the costs involved, I've designed and oversaw the building of similar vehicles in the US in the past, albeit on much larger vehicles (A pair of duce'nd a halfs.) and did something smaller in a HMMVW.
Thanks for the notes :p

So maybe this is something you guys can help me with, I am having trouble finding some dimensions

All these are for a 110 Hardtop.

  • Width between the wheel arches in the load bay.
  • Interior height of load bay from the top of the wheel arches to the roof.
  • Length from front seats to rear door.

Am I right in that the max carry weight of a 110 is 750kg?

If anyone could gimme a hadn with these I'd appreciate it.

I would think along the lines of the FFR spec landys the MOD used. HD suspension etc... The FFR's were able to carry a boot load of batterys and things that weighed a hell of a lot, so copy the MOD spec, then fill it with filming stuff.

I think you need to look at a 130 from the start to give you the loadcarrying ability and also the larger load area . Some thing on the lines of a rapier unit ( some of these were also supplied to USAF) . You could fit a box on the back like a small truck ( grp laminate sheet construction) . Engine choice depends abit on what you want balance between quiet fast thirsty / economical not so quick and a bit noisier V8/300tdi , also if using pto to drive generator or using stand alone genset .
Suspension will only be decided after fit out and final weight to get the softest ride and cope with the weight at same time .
The landrover defender series of vehicles must be the easiest to adapt to any special use of any vehicle produced , as they are basically a big Meccano set ( constructor set. USA) HTSH :)
pm me if you want discuss further as I have built a few specialist vehicles over the years (although not a film unit)

Hmm thats interesting, I hadn't considered a 130.
I need to keep some off road capabilities so would the 130 still be suitable? I would assume so.

and excellent thanks for the point in the direction of the FFR Vehicles, very similar to what I'll be doing so a good base to work from spec wise.

Choice of a Landy is due to being back in Europe access to ex-US military Vehicles is too hard to come by, so Landys are the neatest equivalent I can see.
