Anyone here the driver of this GS that declined the assistance of a
fellow 101 owner because the recovery truck was already on its way?

Alasdair had already phoned me to see if I was nearby with the 110 so
I hope the recovery was by a recovery insurance!

Was it a fault in the transfer box?

Dunno about the one in question, but I do think that the transfer box
breaking up is going to be a fairly common issue in the future.

There's a very good replacement kit (ok, mine was slightly under
machined but it was an early one and the chap has offered to change
it) which will probably last far longer than the 30 odd years the
existing intermediate drive assembly has, and doesn't use the ****ty
'childs toy' needle roller bearings :)

Taint cheap, mind, but bugger all is on a 101...

I also have a little Land Rover site biased toward

Reading this in 'alt.fan.landrover'? Did you know
there's a group FAQ: http://www.aflfaq.dyndns.info

IF I get mine back on the road and IF the gearbox plays up I'm all for
the auto route as a replacement. When I first got the 101 in 91 I
loved the reach up and away to change gear as a pose, as well as
amusing myself playing with XR3Is at traffic lights, but I'd just as
well have one pedal only for most of my driving (like the Smith's
electric I used in my summer job but a bit more verve ;-)).
