Hi, just joined in the hope of getting some answers for my 2012 Freelander 2 GS. I am a complete novice when it comes to cars and really bought this on the basis that it would do me some good miles, suitable for the outdoor lifestyle and generally reputable brand. I bought it in Jan this year from a small garage with 60k and 1 previous owner. I can fault the garage’s service but I am beginning to consider whether this car is a bit of a lemon.

Around a month after getting it I noticed the dash was playing up, flashing off and on with the gauges and dials going crazy, as well as a thousand error messages. However this wasn’t accompanied by any other issues and it drove fine. Then shortly after it didn’t start one morning. The garage came out, fitted a new battery and hoped this would solve the issue. Then unfortunately the dash continued to play up and after the auto electrician took a look they agreed a new dash cluster would most likely solve the issue. It spent a while in repair as it had to be sent off, and I got it back a couple of weeks later around mid March.

It had been fine for the last month, had one error message come up on the dash at the end of March but that was all. Then on Thursday last week (20th April) I went out in the morning and it failed to start. Initially though the cold had got to it and the battery was dud so tried to jump it but that didn’t work. An hour later I tried and it started fine first time. Drove it Friday and Saturday with no issues, then today (23rd April) went out to put some screen wash in and noticed I hadn’t put the battery cover back on the battery (whoops) and it was just sat under the bonnet. So I put it back on, then my partner went out to use the car an hour later and it failed to start. I mentioned the battery cover could have been pushing some wiring and thought it was worth taking it off again, so I did. Locked and unlocked the car and it started fine, then the dash went blank and hasn’t been back on since. Starting fine and driving fine but completely blank dash.

I called the garage on Thursday (it’s in warranty until July) and I mentioned it wasn’t starting so they have already booked it in with a LR specialist on 2nd May. I said I would keep them updated with anything.

Has anyone got any thoughts on what this could be? I do about 150 miles per week and need something reliable. I’m also conscious that this could be a long term issue and the warranty ends in July.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

First off, is it a full 1.0 facelift, or just the 0.5 facelift?

When it's not starting, does the engine crank over, or do nothing when the start button is pressed?

I believe the former.. what only makes it 0.5?

Nope engine doesn’t crank at all. It’s either a start first time or not at all.

A 0.5 facelift is an external facelift only. A 1.0 facelift has a different interior too. The easiest way to tell is if you have a key fob you have to insert into the key dock to the left of the steering wheel, this would be a 0.5 facelift.
If you don't have to insert a key fob, then it's a 1.0 facelift. The latter has many changes to the electronic systems.

Ah definitely the 1.0 facelift then. Dash continues to be blank since Sunday. Garage think it could be the BCU.

It's unlikely to be the CJB.
Before anything is replaced (most modules need configuration to the vehicle), the vehicle needs to have a full diagnostic using JLR SDD. You can't simply swap stuff on these vehicles, as incorrectly configured or different part number modules cause other issues.

There are some instances of Ipack failure, which is where I'd be looking, but only after a proper LR software diagnostic has been carried out.
