Hi all, just had the the codes read on the money pit :doh: td5, auto, reg 51, 121000 miles and it said that injector number 5 had gone down and that I need a new one - injector loom, injector, labour £480 inc vat, about right or to much?

Thats main dealer prices right ?.

I bought a 2nd hand injector off ebay for £ 60.00 and a new loom for £ 30.00.

About an hour and a halfs labour.

Sorry, meant to add.

You can buy a recon injector for around £ 120. ( will be fine ). Cambs injectors in Comberton can get them tested/recond for you.

I would advise you get it tested, as many faults get laid at the injectors door !.

Theres a few good independant,s round here, if you want some numbers.

They will run without the injector codes being put into the ecu, however, I have a HawkEye that can do it in 5 ninutes !.

Who told you it was knackered, and what were your symptoms ?.

As I understand, the symptoms for “misfiring” are, when in top gear (automatic) and try to accelerate the disco judders, its noisy and also uses more fuel. When stationary, I lift the bonnet up and the engine is rocking.

I went over to Wicken 4x4, when it was "misfiring" and they put a diagnostic tester on it and it showed all the pistons working but number 5 was to high!! They said it was the injector, so I paid him the £48 and came home.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
 
The injector " balance " figures dont mean everything.

If an injector is really unhappy, then a fault will be logged in the ecu. ( and even then it can be cleared and not return ).

First things first, check out the red plug on the ecu for oil. If you find it, get a new harness and fit. ( do a search, loads of info and photo,s and how too,s ).

but you say you need a new injector loom if you need a new loom then change this first but he could just be changing this as a matter of cause

Sometimes a run with the HawkEye connected looking at live data, can be very enlightening !.

Can you use a spanner ?.

Yes and a garage to do it if it`s raining!!

Can I ask / be rude would you mind coming over with the HawkEye and taking a look because I`m at my wits end-love it yes-hate it not yet-but sold a 850r Volvo for all this trouble!!

If the engine is "rocking" at idle then you can be fairly sure of a misfire.There are common injector loom causes for this,but to condemn an injector is a bit harsh without further checks.One VERY useful test is to do an electronic compression test with a current clamp on the battery lead connected to a scope.When cranking the engine it gives a very good indication of compression readings on each cylinder by the shape/size of the waveform from the starter current.There is no point at all in fitting a new injector if the cylinder is down on compression due to a bent conrod etc.(Unfortunately all too common with a TD5)
Takes seconds and gives useful diagnostic data - saves the odd arguement about expensive new bits that have failed to cure the problem....:doh:

I/we checked the red plug, and it was BONE dry, before I/we did anything else.

Started the car and it was running sweet, with NO faults logged. Went for a run with the HawkEye connected, and all the live data was as it should be.
Injector " balance " was between +/-5 on all five cylinders.

My 2 thoughts are this,

1, has/can an injector fail and then " come back " ?,

2, Is it possible that I/we have inadvertantly corrected a poor connection at the ecu by unplugging it and plugging it back in ?.

Hi Del here's a few of my thoughts:

1. if all cylinders are within a +/- of 5 then it is highly unlikely to be a faulty injector.

When the engine was rocking at idle - was this on a cold engine? If yes, bear in mind the TD5 engine has only 4 glowplugs, so could it have just been a cold cylinder causing the rocking. How is it when fully warm?

2. You might have done a re-set by disconnecting the ECU but doesn't it just show the value of having your own diagnostic kit. I paid £250 for my v4 of Hawkeye, so about half what the garage was going to charge?

Sounds to me (and hopefully is) like it is fixed, just showing what garages know. "If in doubt throw some new parts at it" appears to be their motto.

Poor diagnosis is expensive and often resolves nothing.

The engine was hot and still rocking at idle, rocking all day when I had to use it for work, thats when Dale came over and done his `magic` we both also put it down to a poor connection on the plug at the ecu and or are-set by disconnecting the ECU plug and plugging it back in - who knows it all works fine now – but it would still be nice to know.
One thing I did do, as we took off the rocker cover I did renew the gasket and put in a new injector loom, more for peace of mind then I found out you can change the `O` rings :eek: – anyone want a injector loom?

if it is an early injector loom then the oil can work its way down threw the plug its self its not just the o rings but if its a later modified loom then you can get away with changing the o rings mine startd to leak and in the service history the loom was change a year before i got it so i just put some gasket sealer on the o rings and refited over a year ago now and still no problems

Thanks for the reply

I learn more each day thanks - The injector loom had been changed it is/was the new model as it had the same numbers on as the new one I brought, only changed it for peace of mind – so if anyone wants one for free just pay p&p or pick up and change the `O` rings to be on the safe side they can have it.
