The bottom hose on my sons 1.8 has spilt can I just buy the hose ?it is the part that plumbs on to the bottom of the rad just passed the plastic part :p thank you

Anyone someone? :p I have been looking around and can only find the whole bit (with the plastic part and other hoses) so my plan is either cut the spilt part off and then refit( all be it a bit shorter) or see if I can get a generic bit of hose an fit that?

Thank you as always lads i have cut the offending bit off and pushed the pipe back on to the rad , it seems ok to me , talk about no room my arms looks like i have been fighting with a cat:D What i did notice was the rad/hose were covered in a sludge no points for guessing what that was , so i checked the water, oil cap and dipstick and all seem fine my thoughts are that when he brought the car he was told the head had been done . Me thinks no one had flushed out the system afterwards , do you think rad flush would do the trick or are there better stuff on the market? all i need to do now is get rid of the airlock the heater went hot now has gone back to cool

Quick update on this after doing my best to bleed the system I took it for a 10 min drive and when I got back the fans were on there was a gurgling every now and then some water would come out of the expansion tank and all the hoses were solid . Is it not bleed properly or is there something else going off?

Did you open both bleed points? One is on the heater pipe and the other from memory is down below the battery on a solid pipe.

I have to be honest no , in my defence I did not know about the second one I spoke to a local mechanic and also having done a search on here I got the same advice was to take the expansion cap off and let the engine run to purge the air from the system .The in line bleed point in the heator hose looks as if it has never been touched and I know exactly what will happen if I try to open that

Start the engine with the heater on full and turn the screw on the heater hose using a large flat blade screwdriver. It's really easy.
I'm not sure where you read it wasn't necessary to bleed it properly, sounds like stupid advise to me.
The second bleed point is less important but your engine will be full of air causing hot spots making another HG failure more likely if you don't bleed it.

Thank you I will try and dig it out for you I take to do this the expansion cap has to come off
Yes, from memory the second bleed point is a 8mm bolt. Whatever you do don't unscrew it too much or it will fall out and you'll have a little fountain while you search for it.
Don't ask how I know.

Well am trying to bleed air out of the top one and at the moment there is nothing but air it seems to be taking ages plus after slightly unscrewing the expansion cap water and bubbles are coming out of there

Is the heater on full? Check it isn't sucking instead of blowing with some spit.
You'll need to take the screw out completely and the cap needs to be off.

ty again will have another go in a bit, there was defiantly air coming out and the expansion tank was like mount Vesuvius This is a pic of the cap the hose/rad had it in as well like I say I was hoping it hadn't been flushed out when the head was first done now I am not so sure. But there is none on the dip stick or the oil filler cap

Yuck!
Here's hoping it's just trapped gunge. I think I'd be doing another flush to be sure. There may be a point where air comes out of both the tank and the bleed screw but eventually you should see coolant coming out of the bleed screw and no air coming into the tank. If it continues to bubble heavily it's probably exhaust gases.

The story so far for the first two times the only thing that would come out of the bleed valve was hot air so I tried taking both the cap and valve off and sticking the hose down the expansion cap .After about 5/10 mins of this I replaced the cap and nearly closed the bleed valve ,then I started to get bubbles then water so at least its a start .The thing that worries me apart from the expansion tank is the fact that the hoses seem to be getting very hard and the one I refitted doesn't seem to be getting that warm , the heater is hotter than I have ever known it just what I need at the mo:DThank you for your help and advice ,I take it the other bleed screw is underneath the air box ?
