Evening Freelanders,

My brother in law bought an 05 freelander last year and only had issues as of November,

On turnover blue smoke appears to exit from the bottom of the engine bay,

I haven't yet been able to look and my experience with td4's is nill as I have a 300Ti,

His garage believes it to be the aircon system but I think that's just bull**** as my brother in law doesn't know how to even service it,

I'd be willing to bet a hose has perished,

Vehicle drives like it should I'm told and isnt "lacking" power,

Ideas ?

Sure its not the fuel burning heater exhaust in front of the NSF wheel?

Both Freelanders and TD4's are unknown to me,

Getting a better Idea from it this weekend as they are driving up/sideways to me,

Is there anything that I should be looking for ?

Was thinking oil in the turbo, and as I said in previous post buggered hose's

Cheers for giving me somewhere to start though :)

It does sound like the auxillary heater.
It only cuts in around 5 degrees so as its mid at the moment you might not see it.
There is a bright metal tube under the nearside front.
When it does start to smoke get him to check its coming from there.

Its a really useful addition to the TD4 as it takes ages to warm up in the cold weather.

Might be the fuel burning heater(FBH) it does let out a blue/black smoke from under the engine. Nothing to worry about as it has a sensor that kicks in when the temperature drops bellow 5.

Quick Update,

Apparently the Blue smoke is there all the time,

Emitted from the passenger side, in front of the wheel,

Ideas ?

Still haven't seen it yet

As said sounds like fuel burning heater, this will run if the temp is below approx 5 degrees until the hippo reaches temp...........if it is still running after ten minutes or so them I would guess a temp sensor is at fault.

Pulling the sensor would only make it struggle in cold weather yes ?

Plan to pull it and send the replacement part onto them with step by step instructions,

Thank you for your help Freelanders, never knew a td4 could be so much hassle compared to a 300tdi :D

Easiest option as a temp fix would be to pull the fuse for the fuel burning heater or pull the feed from it if the fuse also powers other things.........all it will do is make the hippo take longer to get up to temp in a morning if it's not used just like any other motor.

Ok sounds like a good temp fix,

To save me much head scratching, which fuse would it be,

I assume it would be one of the mid range ones ?

Just had a quick chat with him, apparently when pulling up at the lights when warm it still puts out the blue smoke,

I think a good going over the hose's and removing the turbo to check if there's any oil in it,

Really appreciate the help guys

If you use the search button above in the freelander section...just type fbh fuse and there are loads of write ups about it.....it should be fuse 5 20amp.
After having a quick read through it sounds as though there is a seperate thermostat in the fbh which if doesn't shut properly will cause the prob.....but like I say there's loads under the above search.
If the blue smoke is coming from the front...tell him to park up with engine running and look underneath in front of the passenger side front wheel....he will se a small exhaust for the fbh.....this is where the smoke should be coming from.........I thought mine was on fire the first time it happened to me before finding out what it was as you get plumes of smoke bellowing out with a loud fan noise.
