All great and good Ant but I think , personally, I prefer to learn as I go. That way I know what and why. So that when I use the acronym afterwards, I'm not just reeling off letters from a reference doc but can apply it in the correct manner.
For example, during my first couple of years wandering around military type places, I saw SSAFA signs around the place. Was always told it meant Soldiers, Sailors Airmen Families, Association. Turns out there was a missing 'and' in the explanation given. That 'and' makes a BIG difference.
Now when I use an acronym I like to know I know exactly what it means and even more importantly, in a lot of cases, what it does. So when someone asks me what does 'choose acronym' mean, I can either honestly say 'dunno' or can give an informed answer.
However, each to their own and I am sure there are those who will be printing off your, as always, helpful and informative post :D

The info on Varta's date codes I got from other forums (colour coded in South Africa apparently) and earlier years with date stamp on -ve terminal didn't apply to my Varta Blue. Instead it's conviently stamped on the bottom of the case. Yes, really o_O In a clock month and year format. Mine's July 2014. Just seeing now whether it'll still take more charge from that off load terminal volts of 12.05.

The newly installed Yueasu does give a more white light from cabin's filiament bulbs...

Another day, another visit to the Range Rover funny farm...
Quietly minding my own business, went the 12 miles down to Crayford -- tomorrow was scheduled for my visit to the "specialist" workshop to get that ABS sensor changed. Not a chance. Parked up in Crayford car park, returned in 90 mins and...

Without any warning, the security (probably BCM but I haven't investigated further as I only have an iSoft i930 OBD2 diagnostic) decided to lock me in Park, and not permit the previously working ignition key to turn further than position 1. I tried re-training the key fob after changing the CR2016 cell just to make sure. But the module just will not accept any attempts at retraining. In other words the fob's LED just flashes but doors don't go through their lock/unlock sequence. There's also some strangeness going on in that the head unit comes alive with the Land Rover logo but the date and time at the bottom are not there -- just hyphens where the numbers were.

I understand there is a procedure for using a special code given out to the first purchaser that allows reset by using the drivers' door lock turning it a number of times to the left then to the right. But I haven't got that code. Is it possible to get this from my VIN? There are numbers inside the battery compartment of the one working key fob. It locks all doors, but doesn't unlock all doors. Just the drivers

More strangeness: the one working key (when I got back I tried the second after changing its battery too but that wouldn't re-train either) that locks all the doors does then switch on the intruder alarm with red LED flashing on the drivers' mirror.

Erm, do I hear the gentle flapping of white coats?

Code is 0-0-0-0 or 1-1-1-1, can't remember which, but happened to me once.

    Best to write both down.;)

Had the same with my key not turning a couple of days after getting my car, also just getting a click when it did turn. New battery fixed that, then Christmas day same again started first time, 2 hours later nothing, checked battery, tightened loose +ve connection and job done.

No EKA code on L322 - uses the transponder in the key instead so in theory eliminates the need for the emergency code

When you put the key in do you hear the ignition lock and steering lock release?

As asked above - does the steering lock disengage?

If it does but the key still doesn't turn.....it is possibly the ignition lock solenoid....

If it doesn't - have you tried turning the key about 20deg then back beginning then trying again to see if the lock solenoid will disengage.....

    upload_2019-1-10_22-8-19.png

If that still doesn't work, it is most likely a the key and the EWS system is out of sync and needs reprogramming (ask @holidaychicken how he knows about this :D:D) or the in key transponder isn't being read....or the ignition switch coil is duff....

The fact you get dashes on the display means the vehicle battery is so low it couldn't retain the settings.....

    Love these cars eh?

Alarm system / central locking is irrelevant as if the key transponder is ok you can unlock the doors with the key and the alarm will sound but will stop when key put in ignition if the transponder is ok, the transponder doesn’t need any power either to disengage the steering, the car does of course.

The EWS immobiliser link problem I had only stops the cranking on TD6 and fuel and ignition on petrol, but still cranks.

If key won’t turn I would always try a jump start first to see if it’s power.

Then if steering lock is clicking but key not turning it is likely the steering lock or ECU or solenoid , can’t remeber which fuse but removing steering lock fuse for a bit and replacing will allow one turn of the key if steering lock is to blame - probably. Could still be steering lock if not clicking though

I think gear selector switch is another culprit as wont turn if not in park or neutral I think.

Sequence is something light key talks to ignition switch receiver, tells EWS, EWS tells steering to unlock, steering tells EWS it’s unlocked, EWS tells ignition barrel to release and sends code to engine ECU to start, car might start but will probably break down for another reason, you spend another fortune getting that fixed, something else breaks and you think, oh well I’m already in to this pile of ****e for a ton of money so I may as well carry on, then a major engine or transmission fault causes you to lose all faith in it, you either scrap it for parts, get divorced , go bankrupt , the recovery truck taking it to the breakers reverses over your dog, you buy a Mitsubishi or Toyota and realise that you now have no friends as they don’t even have a forum as they don’t go wrong. Something like that anyway.:)
