Whats the score folks, if you get a LPG conversion done, does it change your road tax rate or do you just save on fuel duty?

Cheers Dutch RR

An LPG conversion saves about £20 year on the car tax, best bet is just run a slightly older car.

My RR spews out a massive 398 g/km of CO2 according to the website, so would qualify for the worst tax band possible. Actual cost £185.00 for 12 months as its a '99. Best way i know to stick 2 fingers up to them ****s in charge of this country   .

Looked on the DVLA website and it lists tha band G only applies to cars registered after 23/03/06. Id be inclined to trust what it reads on the website and not in some garbage of a newspaper!

I own up, the DVLA website hasnt been updated! But in reading on other websites (BBC NEWS) it lists my 03 TD4 Manual is still only £190 per year. However mine only produces 205 G/KM, how come your auto produces 240G/KM?

It also has a footnote on band G saying that it only applies to cars registered after Mar 2006. Now the confusion has arisen because Band G has now become Band G to M and while there's nothing to say whether the 2006 cut off still carries on for the new bands neither is there anything to say that it doesn't. So why don't we just wait till The treasury responds to my Email.

Agree the foot note implies post 2006 cars (in line with last years change). Media seem to have jumped on it a bit but there is definite confusion. Perhaps this is intentional to allow a U turn or clarification based on public feeling.

I feel they will really have shot themselves in the foot if they are applying this retrospectively.

Anyone in London etc would be hit by the 25 per day new congestion and parking charges sparking a huge backlash in their back yard.

Fingers cross it doesn't apply. Won't hit me till next Sept but £415 (then 430) is a lot to pony up on VED year after year.

Because it's an auto, they are sometimes less economical and therefore produce more g per km.

Read the link Death viking posted from the Gov website

It says 186 - reg before March 2006 - £210

Band G - 2006 on.

I think we might not have to pay.

Not have to pay? This government will screw us for every penny. I wish you were right but I am certain you are not. Unfortunately a large proportion of the general public dislike 4x4's /gas guzzlers without giving the issue any logical thought. If they think we are paying more they will be delighted.

Depending on when your tax is due I can avoid this till Feb 2010 by getting a 6 on 1st sept and 12 in feb. I think it kicks in on 1st April 09 the new rate.

1 tax at 415 in feb 2010.

Another 200 quid over 3 years it's really not that bad ..... Probably loose 10 x that trading in a perfectly good car now.

Not sure I'd bother buying anything new until we have stable VED bands - this must be creating havoc with fleet managers.

When's that LR1 coming out????

It will need to be an LR point 01 I think !
Seriously I hope you are right about the 6 month plan, mine and son's V6 are both due end of this month so might try it. My daughter and partner each have cars in the max band as well so our family circle will give the gov. a lot more money to waste next year. I take the view hang on to the car you've got and try to watch other motoring costs, at least we have this group for maintenance advice.

looks like my TD4 tax will go upto £300 next april. Not too bad but they are robbing ****ers, really how much more money do they want from us. They are hitting us in the pocket for everything. As far as i see they are constantly picking on the working man.

Autos tend to be slightly less efficient than manuals. Strangely the Freelander 2 TD4 Auto kicks out 224 so stays in band G.

The DVLA website is only concerned with how much VED is now, not in the future.

Just been on the Landy web site.

Some good news for the future, from 2009 the Freelander 2 will be fitted with stop/start technology reducing CO2 by 10%. That puts the well within 175 and a reasonable tax band.

Even the current model auto (TD) is "only" 224 and 194 for man.

Doesn't help us currnent TD4 auto owners but some hope I can continue to own a Landy long term.

No good blaming the government. The blame has to go to those that voted for this rabble in the first place.
You were all warned many years ago!! Remember the campaign ad with hands coming out of bread bins etc and pinching money?

Anyway, I was happily driving my 1972 Beetle around at the weekend knowing that I pay £0 road tax....... despite the horendous emmissions that old aircooled engine must put out!
