Or do I need to keep saving to get a decent one? Have spend ages reading this forum, I know you get what you pay for but there are some half decent looking old 90's with 200tdi's fitted for around this money. Would just like some opinion off you good people.:):):)

You want decent looking. Are you going to look at it or drive it? You want to get one that is very solid in the mechanical side of things . Take your time and look them over very close. crawl under them with flash lite, screw driver, wire brush and look at every rust spot and oil leaks. jack up the tyres and remove them and check the brakes real close. A complete brake job would be about 400 quid for everything needed just for parts.

So go carefully just remember the cheaper they are the more money you will have to spend from the get go. there will be doubters out there.

Just have a idea what things cost to repair,and the tools needed to do the jobs and do you have the ability to do the repairs and the place to work on them.

my 90 was less than 2 grand and apart from being a bit dented (even more so now) was mechanically sound. ex mod tho so that might have been why their wasn't much interest on ebay
 
There is the other side of the coin, you could spend fek loads and get a lemon.
I know someone who spent 5grand on a 110, and the rear crossmember was fillered and ready to fall off:eek:
Also had countless other problems.
Richard91 got a good one albeit dented.
I'd check out these ones you been looking at, you never know they might be a gem:D
 
I think its swings and roundabouts My Disco was £750 with 6 months tax n ticket took a little while to identify the faults To do list almost complete with a month to spare and when complete it will have cost me just over a grand including buying it.

All work has been done by myself and parts are cheap enough and easily accesible Including some parts sourced here (Cheers Vaggy)

Now I know a 90 or 110 holds its value more and that most on here would not touch a £750 Tratta with a 10 foot scaffold pole but you could get a running project for your budget or hang on and save for something needing less obvious work

either way it doesnt matter what you spend on the base car doesnt guarantee a good buy and you may get lucky paying less whatever you buy make sure it has some ticket so you get time to figure any faults before you have to get it tested and only buy if you are happy you can afford to get it through whether using a garage to do the work or doing it yourself

Thanks for all the replies, got stuck in a meeting at work so couldn't answer. Right, well if I can stand to keep saving for another eternity I will. If i appear again in a couple of weeks though saying 'here's what i bought' please go easy on me. Found one advertised on here for £2750, its a 1987 County with 200tdi fitted and looks good. Am so wary of buying a lemon, trying to persuade my mate to come with me, he knows what he's looking at whereas I'm just a keen to learn pleb. Will let you know how I get on with it. Sound's and looks ok - he says that it will fly through MOT and the only thing wrong is a rotten capping - didn't exactly know what that was! :)
 
I paid £1350 for a mint slightly dented 1988 90 everything was original and worked and been stored in a barn as a third vehicle. Bulkhead has just started to go but 1988 can't complain!! Have replaced the bulkhead and re-sprayed it and added a few extras and to me (looks the nuts).
 
Best advice would be to take along someone who knows their Landys

Someone with landy ownership / experience would know all the places to check on these

I took along my mate who advised me not to buy the Disco we had viewed

He said it had too much rust

I asked him, how do you know where to look for these rust areas

He replied, On a Disco, its usually between the headlights and the towbar :doh:

No offence to the seller but he only joined to sell his vehicle.. shame really as its not someone who is a regular member or been on here a while.. :)
