New Landy owner so need help

Hi all

You prob think this is sad but i have just bought my first ever Landrover Discovery and too honest am abit way too excited over the whole thing. Anyways its a L reg 200tdi and to be honest needs alittle bit of tlc as can be expected. I don't mind getting my hands dirty and will try my hand at anything so thought i would join this forum for help and advise (my other half is abit scared at the whole prospect of letting me loose on it).
Right to start with i need to replace the boot floor and need some advise on this.
Next some of the paint work needs touching up around the sills but mainly around the door edges.
And lastly (for now) the passanger side door needs the lock looking at as is a little tempremental in opening. I'm thinking of just taking the panel off and cleaning it up and WD40 first.
Any advise and opinions on my journey would be greatfully received.
(I'm not as sad as i sound honest )

if you feel like it when youve sorted all the rust out, instead of touching up the bits youve done just get some paint and do the whole thing in whatever colour you feel like

I agree but i am confused as too the best course of action to treat the rust, i have read the forums all night and now feel alittle dazed by the options.
Can anyone recommend where the rust is not to bad and only a tiny hole, can this be filled with ohh i dont know fiberglass and then smoothed primed and painted; the areas i need to do are not structual, or would i be commiting a sin. See i told you i havent a clue what to do. Absolutely any ideas i can diy and doesnt involve welding would be brill.
The boot floor i am totally replacing and having welded even though the holes are only about 2 inches big, but having kids in the back i decided this was best really. (Any welders in the west midlands area *wink wink*)
Also where the metal is just browning but still strong luckily all my arches feel strong, what can i put on them to protect them and prevent the rust getting any worse. Sorry to be a pain....

Thanks for that i was wondering what i was going to use, does this also stop the rust from spreading any further?? D
Do you have any tips for what to paint on the underside once all clean up for extra protection or should i just leave be??
No doubt i shall find some extra rust when all is clean up and visible but heyhoo what do i want for 17 year old car, but strangley enough loving it.

Hi Tina and welcome.

Boot floor - buy a new panel from Paddocks Spares for about £60;

General rust treatment - buy a flap wheel for your electric drill. It takes off the rust without digging in, so you end up with a good result. I used lots of Hamerite paint when I did the boot floor of my wife's TDi 200 and the rust never came back.

Waxoyl is good to use once you've done the repairs underneath, in an attempt to stop the rust coming back.

As for Landy yes she's abit rusty and spotty in places but nothing i'm too worried about as it doesnt seem structural, abit of rust treatment, filler and respraying i'm hoping will do the job and give her a nice new face life. As for the underneath i just wanna make sure i protect her and that the rust i shall be getting rid off doesnt come back in a hurry, i will not be doing this until the new boot floor has been welded in and everybit of the underside checked for bits of rust. Hopefully if i give her a little tlc she will return the favour and look after me also. (How centimental am i, all go awwwwwww........ LoL)
Also can you replace the seals around the non movement windows ie the back sides and the boot door window or would abit of clear sealent do as they leak abit when pressure washed(ok so my daughter got a face full) obviously i wanna do things as easily as possible but will do properly if absolutely necessary. Dont wanna be known as half bob-a-job on here

Classic car restoration, kit cars and motorcycle restoration tools and equipment - Frost Auto do plenty of goo designed to cure your window issues, John Wayne would use black bath sealant
