with the sensors disconnected the black and yellow registered 4.92v
and red and white registered 12v

the same outcome on both sides. so i assume that juice is getting to the sensors.
i cannot see how i would test the sensors while they are connected as there
is nowhere to put the prongs.

would it be ok to strip the wire back slightly and then mask up again when i finished.

ok i after a fashion i have managed to take some readings.
one sides readings jumped about quickly and was quite difficult to read
but i managed to see some flucturations in the 0.4v to 0.9v which going
by the site lambdasensor.com is in the required limits to confirm that it is
working correctly. the other side just registered 4.92v and just stayed still
so i think that side is dead.

The engine ecu is adaptive, that is it makes adjustments to fuelling etc. to take into account wear and tear. It is possible with diagnostics to reset the settings to default level (As it was when the car was new).

so do you think both sensors are ok then and i should be getting the ecu reset. i had the becs reset when it was plugged in to testbook.
i don't know if it is all in my mind but i switched the sensors around and have been playing around abit today with stuff. nothing really but i checked all the leads and 1 or
2 were not quite home and i put a tie around them so they wernt all resting on the rocker covers. i changed the breather pipes from rocker covers to plenum chamber
and reset the trip computer and went for a spin aroun town for about 8 miles. instantly thee mpg went to 9 and crept into the 10s and even hit 11. the only thing was, when i sat at the lights and roundabouts etc it went down to 9 but did get back into the 10s again whilst moving. i have never seen it fluctuate in such a big way before. even yesterday i filled her up and put some injector cleaner in and went for a good country run but only got mpg it up to 7.5.
what i dont understand is why it drops so suddenly at idle as this is where it burns less fuel, isnt it?
i also managed to change a leaky heater rad pipe.

thats getting better you seem to be on the right line i think i may be tempted to still change them if for nothing else just to see if it was any better. well done j

i was thinkin that too until irish said about ecu reset. not to sure if he thinks both sensors are ok. i am thinking about driving somewhere pitch
black and looking for a firework display under the bonnet as i read on an
old thread that faulty leads can lead to excessive mpg.
i am also looking to test the injectors but will need some advice on this.
one thing for sure is its still running rich and the petrol smell is still there.
and then there was those emission figures??????????????/

taking them out and swaping round wont fix it you know that. but i still think you on right lines. hows your air filter? have you changed it? what irish said is right you could reset ecu but not sure if it would help untill you get every thing spot on j

yeah i did know that but i read somewhere that if one side works it can still send
the running rich message to ecu. just wondering if it had to be a perticular side.
my air filter has been changed, and thats another thing, as a test i was thinking of
leaving it out to see if it sucked more air through. i was bit confused about irish's
ecu reset comment and wondered why he not mention it before.

irish, just been down east runton for the day and rounded it off with a pint in
the white horse ( they didnt have any salt n shake crisps though )
i got the old trip meter up to 13.8 mpg. if one of the lambda sensors is duff will
and the other is working will it still improve the mpg much. i am still concerned
by those emission results?

Good for you!! Did you manage one in the Fishing Boat further down the street??
Changing the other one will do no harm if it's shot as it sends the feedback for that bank of cylinders.
To be honest though, I feel there is a deeper seated problem that's causing the emissions to be high. However to do things methodically is a good discipline rather than going like a bull at a gate at it.
Just keep us posted as to progress or otherwise.
Good luck:tea:

will definatly keep you posted but i dont want to just chuck money at it willy nilly.
if i new for definate what was up i would get it done, within reason... if not the
sensors what would you be looking to do next. i have had the stepper motor
suggested as a possible problem

only managed the one in the white horse as went on to sheringham for fish n chips
as the chippy in runton was closed.
