feck me 800ft!! how longs your winch wire?

do you carry enough motorway barriers and timber to cover the 800ft?

The cable on my winch is 150ft. I have 3 more in my locker. I then have 2 x 75ft 15 ton strops, 1 ex military 100ft 10 ton strop, then a variety of other strops, chains, straps etc. I think my record line pull was at about 925ft.

I carry approx 30 pieces of timber. I don't carry motorway barriers. They just happen to run along the edge of motorways. If you are using a winch cable down a motorway embankment you need to stop trhe cable cutting the barrier and the barrier cutting the cable. Thats easy when on a single line pull. By the time you get to double, triple or quadruple line pulls it takes a lot of work to keep everything protected.

If winching a vehicle up a cliff you can't park on the cliff edge for access and safety reasons. so you will need protction for the last metre or so of the cliff edge plus anywhere that juts out while you're at it.

I dont know why people rave about synthetics. they dont like mud, they dont like sun. I have heard that they still whip a fair bit (not as bad as steel) therefore safe winch practice should be used regardless of if its steel or synth. £20 for a new steel? or £250 for a synth that needs washing and mothering?

I know where my money is. Just not enough advantages in synth to make it viable.

My 7.5 ton truck has 12 ton springs fitted. I still snap at leat one a year, sometimes more.

£120 for my plasma..seen a plasma snap and it probably recoiled approx 5ft then fell to the ground..when i saw a steel cable snap it ripped a big slash in the rear tailgate of a rr classic,i dread to think what it would have done if it was someones leg

whats the drum width on your landy? Whats the rope width and length of your plasma? Do you use it everyday? how many wraps of the drum is your winch?

My truck winch has a 10" drum width, 150ft of 10mm wire rope. It gets used most days and is kept correctly wound at all times. It is 4 1/2 wraps deep. It is oiled once a week.

My pto landy winch is a 13" drum and has 11mm cable thats approx 75ft long. I haven't got a prop fitted yet so it's not correctly wound. I will be fitting a 200ft 10mm wire rope when I fit the prop.

its a warn xd9000i winch i got 12mm plasma on it when i got it was 120ft but i reckon i had to cut off atleast 10-15ft to get it on the drum..it gets used regulary with no probs so far..the only problem i can see is sun fade

So you HAVE to winch in pretty much a straight line to avoid cutting through your rope then?

anyway, yes you may be right. When the rope recoiled on both was there a winch sail over the line? sounds like the steel rope wasnt dampned and the synthetic should have had a sail on.

At £120 it's still 4 times the price of a 150ft wire rope. I go through a winch cable at a rate of about 1 every 2-3 years.

If kept well oiled flat spots will either pull out or can be tapped out with a hammer. ( I haven't had to tap one out for about 5 years now).

At 12mm thick it is quite restricting on available length too.

My money is still on wire.

With wire extensions you're not tempted to just chuck em in yer vehicle to get coiled late either. With plasma I would.

the speed of the winch line is down to the 8274 not the synthetic line. Its the quickest winch on the market.

i understand the warn winch is the fastest and doesn't matter what is fitted to it, i was impressed with the PLASMA ropes as well as the winch

i think its down to personal opinion what peeps use anyway plasma ordered today

Spot on RS, I thought it was very interesting too.

Dan at TerraFirma says go for wire, it's not much heavier and a lot cheaper. And as Ratty pointed out you get more on the drum wossit thingamy. I'm not expecting to use my winch very often, so this thread has convinced me for wire, just got to oil it up by the sounds of it.

The steel will eat the aluminium.

Those alu fairleads were designed for synthetic winchlines (wish people would stop using words like plasma/marlow etc, they are brand names of the same thing!). Likewise you cant use these synths with a roller because a roller will jam and eat that to!

Having read loads about these ropes recently (tho having no practical experience - yet!) it would seem that an advantage of the synthetic over the wire ropes is for winch challenge competitors - They dont bother reeling in the rope between points on the course, they just chuck the excess rope over the bonnet as it is very light....

I hate the way the roller stick out...and I know that my Missus would drive into other cars in carparks with them sticking out.....so i may pick the synthetic rope and low profile fairlead......Decisions Decisions!

exactly. competition use. Works a treat for those boys, but like everything maintenance of kit is vital for them.

Re your fairlead. the roller adds protection! If you dont like it sticking out, get a bumper that houses the fairlead within it. My ARB works pretty well
