 Hi is anybody out there who can help me. I own a 2004 LR Defender 90 TD5 and recently took it for a service as the ABS and TC light were permanently on. They ran a diagnostic test and have told me that the electrical module switch on the ABS modulator is broken. They have said i will need to replace the whole ABS unit which is about 2K!! or if the Discovery unit is the same I would only have to replace the valve with the electrical module switch which would be considerably less (£300) Problem is I cant get a definitive answer from anyone as to whether the Disco is the same part as the Defender. I hope this all makes sense to everyone out there. As although I love my LR i have absolutely no idea how to deal with this ABS problem. Many thanks to you all.

Have a look on ebay. They usually go for less than £150 from breakers on there. Sometimes they go for as little as £15.

Find the connectors by following the wires back from each of the wheels.
Unplug and clean the connectors with some WD40 or some such.
Grease them with some vaseline and plug them back together.
Dont forget the connectors to the WABCO and the control box under the drivers seat (well it is on my TD5).
Fire it up and see if it has made any difference.
If it still dont work then you've only lost a little time but if it fixs it you've saved some money.
Dont be afraid to have a go and get your hands dirty. Its only a Land Rover.
I used to have a Cherokee Jeep and the dealer told me that I needed a new ABS wheel sensor and control unit. 10 minutes fidling about as above and it worked fine for 4 years until I sold it. Basically dealers are only interested in replacing parts because that is where they make their money. After all it takes some front to charge you £2k for cleaning some connectors.

Thank you Shifty think you are my new best friend:banana:

I will def give it a go. Thought I might buy a repair manual to help me along. Is there any one you would recommend.

Thank you for your help it is much appreciated

Haynes manuals are easier to work from, although if you have a look in the common questions sections here you'll find a link where you can download Landrover's RAVE manual, an indepth workshop manual but is sometimes a bit harder to read than the Haynes manual. (Y)

Not sure that any workshop manual will tell you where the connectors are.
Just need to use some common sense and follow the wiring looms by eye.
Means laying on the floor sometimes.
If you take the wheels off you can often see the individual ABS wheel sensor wiring and connectors through the wheel arches. Do one at a time and make sure the motor is properly supported before you put your head or any other part of your body in there.
