Gas and the 4.6

I have read a lot about converting to gas with various tales of problems and joy.

Has any of our members had a gas system with a p30 4.6 for a reasonable time ?
If so would they buy it agin if they bought another 4.6?

well i have a 4.0se, i bought it because it is gas converted, its a zavoli/leonardo system with 110 ltr dual tanks in the wheel well. although its an old system and was in a bit of a state before i sorted it(ex gas fitter so i can relate to gas products/systems) it runs extremely well.

i had the backfiring, cut outs and starvation of heat to cab( look for a few of my posts) the backfiring was basically down to the previous owner not changing the plugs frequently. i use just normal plugs(wifes uncle is mechanic and gets them at 18p each) and it hasnt backfired since i changed them.

rigged the gas vapouriser in series with the cab heater and thats sorted the heat issue and ensures full heat to vap, also seems to use less gas(probably all in my mind tho!!!) also less airlocks as i re-routed water pipes to vap lower down!!

the cut outs are usually due to me switching over to lpg a bit too soon!!! bit of a scrouge!!

i'd say go for it, especially if you do motorway miles as the slight performance drop will not show!!!

I had the Prins sequential system fitted 3 years this Jan coming by a good guy in Slough all certificated etc and done approx 45k and not a problem whole thing has been brilliant they are BPV - which is Barry Porter Vehicles I think try them he is a dead straight bloke

Sorry meant to say no performance drop either as the gas ecu takes its reading for each injector from the main ecu so it is a conversion job for the computer - I am near Windsor if you want to try driving it

Slough is not far from me.

I have heard gas can reduce the life of the 4.6 due to overheating.

Any comments?

Gas runs hotter, coz it doesnt have the cooling effect of petrol.

Mine has never shown signs of overheating and apart from start up only runs on gas.

lpg runs hotter than petrol because it is introduced into the engine as a gas rather than a squirt of liquid as in petrol, lpg is around 85% of the calorific value of petrol so cannot produce more heat, the heat gain is from the lack of cooling from the liquid petrol.

this can be countered, in theory, by installing an uprated oil cooler system although i don't think one exists as such. for most conditions keeping the current system in top condition will suffice.

also dont forget that p38 engines suffer whether on petrol or gas, i think if its going to go then its probably not been looked after very well in the first place.

i have seen a vast improvement in the running of my car just by making it airtight and putting new plugs in, for the sake of a few quid its not worth risking!!!

most people report that the car runs just above vertical on the temp. guage. mine does the same on petrol or gas so i can see a problem developing because of gas in this respect!!

One of the main reasons for LPG cars suffering overheating is that many of them have small coolant leaks on the vaporiser hoses or the vaporiser itself.Owners dont check the level often enough and the engine gets lunched.Other problems are poor tuning of the LPG,(Rarely are they set up too rich.)And low gas pressure from blocked filters,sluggish diaphrams in the vaporiser not allowing enough gas through.All thesemake the engine run hotter from the lean mixtures.
I see quite a few fitted with the Romano RIS system - once its set up it works very well,even on Bosch injected v8's.

My 4.6 had Gas fitted when I bought it. A Landi Renzo fully sequential system with donut tank in place of spare wheel. I have had the car almost 2 yrs now. Had a minor problem when I first had it but got the ECU checked and reset, been fine ever since.

As far as running hot is concerned, my temp gauge is vertical and never moves regardless of fuel. IF the engine is good to start with and the cooling system maintained in good order it should be fine. After all the cooling system was designed to operate in much hotter average temps than we get in the uk so it should have plenty of reserve capacity.

I think the best advice is to opt for the latest multi point injection, they seem far more reliable.

the point about the mix is a very good!!! don't penny pinch! getting the set up is probably the most important, you can get the kits to setup the software yrself but i would get the kit and get it setup by a good professional, the you can check it yrself!!

my gague does the same which ever nut the heats summat else.its me first V8 after 2 1/4 doisel so prehaps its just normally hot compared to 2 1/4 shed
