Morning,

Just took mine in for an MOT.
It failed on suspension wear and emissions:
  • Exhaust carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle exceeds default limits (8.2.1.2 (b))
  • Exhaust Lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (8.2.1.2 (c))
  • Exhaust carbon monoxide content at idle exceeds default limits (8.2.1.2 (b))
  • Nearside Front Outer Track rod end ball joint dust cover insecure so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.1.3 (g) (ii))
  • Offside Front Outer Track rod end ball joint dust cover insecure so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.1.3 (g) (ii))
  • Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (5.3.4 (b) (ii))
  • Offside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (5.3.4 (b) (ii))
I can sort the suspension myself, but wondering what is involved in getting the emissions sorted.
This is the result of the emissions test:

Anyone had similar experience and know what kind of repairs are needed?

Thanks

MOT station has just rang - they reckon there could be an issue with the cats. Said they sounded hollow when they tapped them. Is there a quick way to diagnose this?

Have a feel along the top, use a mirror or your phone front camera to have a look for cuts/welds to see if its been opened.
I don't think that's the source of the high CO. I still think it's the o2 sensors or air leak

It's at the station right now so I can't take a look yet - I did mention the lambda sensors, but they said they were '100% confident' the cats are at fault.

They said they would have to change all 4 lambda sensors to be able to rule that out, and I'd be looking at 4-500 quid to give that a try.

I've told them to go ahead with the suspension work for now, while I look in to the emissions issues.

If they do MOT's I would be sure they would know if the cat had been tampered with you should see it easily enough when on ramps.

thats utter garbage
anyways, you wouldnt get high CO and normal HC with failed cats
high CO = its running rich, normal HC no/nominal unburnt fuel, ie no misfire or bad valves
diag will tell you if an o2 sensor is running ok, fuel trims will tell you if its injecting too much fuel

@MrGorsky just took the LPG off his. Fit that, fill it and drive it in on gas. They'll have to test it on gas and it will almost certainly pass!

Haven't heard back from the garage today (despite telling me they'd ring - classic).
There's another garage a bit further which has all the LR diagnostic equipment, so I've booked it in with them later this week.
Hopefully all will become clear then.

And BTW, most P38 only have two O2 sensors as far as I know, so check before someone charges you for four of them !!
Thanks, wasn't sure about this - got lots of conflicting answers online.

Gonna go down and see what the situation is in the morning - hopefully they've at least done the suspension work

They will should be easy to see just before & usually nothing after the cats (unless it's a US Import).
