First thing to do with any autobox problem is check fluid level.
Older cars may have a dipstick, usually up against the bulkhead. Newer cars you might need to get to the filler plug on the side of the box.
You need to check the level with the car on the flat, the car at operating temp and the engine running.

.....and having first run it through all the gears holding it in each one for a coupla seconds. (Official way for D2 gearbox, I've had to do this v often in the past 2 years until the fault was recently corrected.)

If it is the 6HP26 then no you can't just pull a plug to check the fluid level.

The gearbox should be cold, or as LR state cool for both the D1 & 2 autos, the same as for my old RR, and still the same maybe for other newer LR autos.

Some auto vehicles not LR I’ve owned have two level marks on a dip stick, if the gearbox has one, ATF expands when hot so will use the level marked H or C when cold which is of course is below H. Handy as u can check the fluid level any time

From memory most boxes spec a max and min oil temp for checking. My 6hp26 has a fill plug/check plug so i assumed they all did

The 6hp26s has to have the oil at around 45c to get an accurate reading.

With the auto gearboxes that i’ve done a fluid check the dip stick has graduation, so yes from low to max with something in between much like a dipping for engine oil level.
My earlier reference to fluid temperature was to the max fill level on the dip stick only on vehicles i’ve owned.
