First and foremost I should say. This FL2 2007 is my first car. I’ve had it over a year now and learning as I go. I still feel I know nothing about cars and never had a father figure to guide me. Instead I have Google and YouTube

That said, the following my sound stupid.
I checked the oil in the engine and the oil on the dipstick is really low down. I bought some oil via Amazon that said it is meant for my car. Do I literally just pop the cap and pour that into the oil part of the engine?

Seems simple enough but I really don’t want to fudge anything up.

Thank you

Hiya, might be worth quoting what type of oil you got so someone can check it here before you put it in.

Its probably all right, but suppliers have been known to ship the wrong stuff!

Presume its a TD4?

Be careful when filling, engines only take about 5L from empty - so don't go tipping in 4L then check the dip stick! If you overfill it you must remove some before you fire it up.

Not sure how much takes a F2 TD4 from the Low mark on the stick to the High mark - maybe someone knows?

I don't have a F2 so can't say where the fill is - usually there's a big yellow or green cap on the top of the engine that you take off and fill through there. Does it show you in the Owners Handbook if one came with the car?

You say you've had the car over a year now, have you had it serviced? It should be, its a false economy not to really.

Lastly, do you know why the oil was low?

Great advice, really appreciate it!

Yes, sorry it's a Freelander 2 TD4 S - 2007 - Diesel - Automatic

I had a major service in February, starting to think that Halfords may have done a shoddy job on the oil check :/
Not sure why the oil is so low, to be honest, there is a leak patch where I park but nothing huge.
The type of oil is 5W-30, only nabbed a 1l bottle, so I don't fear of overloading it. Might need to get a bit more now thinking about it.

Deffo, all GrumpyGel's fault. :D
Was the oil level on the dipstick looking okay after you topped up? Try not to go over the full mark, aim for just under full as extra oil can cause problems the like of which you don't want to deal with.

Ok, feel I should return and say everything is fine and dandy :) No explosions like some poor mans Michael Bay movie :D

Where was the oil level after adding the 1 Litre bottle you bought?

I'd avoid Halfords myself, especially if they can't get the oil level correct.

I apologise in advance for stating the bleeding obvious, but always make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground before checking the oil level and only check it after the engine has been switched off for several minutes. Also, dont use Halfords for servicing, their "mechanics" are all idiots.
