Driving home today noticed the steering got a bit heavy, pulled over to check the belt. Found this

Crankcase seal has failed...

Luckily it was still there and didnt loose much oil!

Doesnt appear to be breathing heavy but I did notice a couple puffs of white smoke. Nothing major and not constant, just a lil puff in second when pulling away + a little haze in 5th at round 70.

Fixed for now, silicone + a lil brace to hold it on.

Engine oil doesnt appear to be rising but i will check.

Coolants fine, nice pink colour.

Engine oil smells like oil not derv.

Injector seals where done last year by a pro garage.

The seal has been weeping for a while, just a failed seal or something to be concerned about?

My TD5's front cam seal.... ;)

Just fell out.

I have to push the new one in, the old one just sat there when i tried to re-fit it! ;)

just fit a new o ring and silicone that back in ,very common issue

Thanks for the replies lads!

could crank case be pressurising?

What could cause this?

Ive bypassed the Provent for the time being, i remember a post by @sierrafery saying they can cause issues.

Doh now you've gone and done it.......you used the key words that @bankz5152 and I cant resist "new' Shiny' and a pipe!

Ermmm i ordered one already :oops::oops::oops: :D without that silly breather pipe.

Should make for a better longer lasting seal, then I can add o rings to my emergancy toolkit.

but what’s the point of the breather on a td5?

After a massive backlash when he released it Fourby also released a non breather version. I mean there is a massive 1" breather on the top if ita breathing heavier than that something is wrong.

Dunno, I wondered about blowby in the cylinders or valves?
James seems to suggest that the thing just falling out is not uncommon though and just a ‘thing’ - I don’t know the td5 engine though sorry

No problem thanks though :)

It has been replaced before when weeping, looks like its just poor maintenance on my part.

Drove to work today much less smokey for one, i wonder if the Provent has been causing issues...

most i see are loose and leaking as the o ring flattens and hardens, i put a new o ring on with some silicone as a matter of course when i have the bonnet upon a customers td5 for whatever reason its come in for

Noticed oil leaking down the back of the engine on our Defender TD5.
Traced it to this circular grommet which was just a loose fit in the cylinder head and you could turn it by hand.
Fitted a new one which had to be tapped in with a small hammer.
And all’s fine now.
