Have disassembled a spare assembly to understand how it works. I also now have 2 rollers spare!! Where do they fit please? Will photograph and post.

I have those rollers spare too, only I left them out deliberately. Their job seems to be too pull the lock barrel back out as the key is withdrawn. They go under the sticking out squared off U shape, right over the barrel entrance.

I didn't take any pictures of mine, but I'm definitely replacing mine with one from the MGF. My lock still isn't perfect, with occasional snagging, so it's got to be swapped out.

Fitted a new steering lock to my Wife's TD4 today. I learned a couple of things and so thought I'd share as this seems to be a common problem as the vehicles get older. This one had a very intermittent and annoying failure of the ignition barrel to turn - usually when there were other cars behind - petrol station etc !!

So - bought a replacement on Ebay (new old stock) - assumed I needed the one with an interlock cable as it is an auto.
This 2002 auto does not have an interlock cable ! So left it fitted, as it relies on a spring return in the cable to operate - if you remove the interlock cable you can't get the key out!! Easy swap otherwise, small chisel, several taps on each shear bolt and then undo with long nose pliers. Swapped cables over, didn't remove steering wheel - just the cover trim.
I thought I could simply leave the old key on the key ring and the chip would 'talk' to the reader coil to enable the car to start, but it doesn't. The chip has to be inside the coil circle to operate the system. So - have been to local key cutters to get new blank cut with an opening case on the key to take the old chip.

Job done - hopefully this will do another 100k miles ! I think the problem was that this was a low mileage F1 when we bought it so that means lots of short runs and key turns I guess !!!

So - check the actual type fitted even if you have an auto - Haynes shows an interlock cable for all automatics - wrong ! This 2002 TD4 seems to provide the interlock electronically from the gear select to the immobiliser.

Also, I don't know how people 'tape old key in steering column' and use a new 'chipless key'. It simply wouldn't work on this car anyway - the reader coil is very selective about the chip being inside the circle to work - I played for a while to check this out.

No interlock cable on my 05 auto either, nor any other UK auto I've seen. I thought it was only some export autos that needed the key interlock, so it complies with local rules.
Glad yours is sorted.
I could do with a permanent fix for my ignition lock, preferably without spending loads of cash.

This one was £125 on ebay. New old stock. Figured it was a waste of time fitting another used one. Keys £15 at local key shop without chip. Lock came with one master non chip type key.
