Hi all,

Range Rover P38A, 2.5 oil burner from 1995 ...

As some of you know I had some contamination in my handbrake drum a month or so ago. Damned if I could see where it came from but the only thing I could think of was that the prop-shaft grease had separated and some oil-like substance had somehow got into the hand-brake drum contaminating the surface and making the handbrake useless. Disassembled, cleaned and reassembled and all was good ... for a few months. It is starting to act up again so I suspect it is contaminated again.

So, the question: where could the oily substance be coming from other than the transfer box (which looked good and should be as it was new from Ashcrofts in the summer). Could it come down the handbrake cable? But if so, from where and why?!

Ideas welcome before I spend another freezing evening in the dark under it!

Cheers,

J

On the transfer box? Checked that last time and it looked mint. I replaced the rear seal between the gearbox and transfer box when I did the transfer box. Guess I could have nicked it somehow.
yes not gearbox or t/box input, rear output ftc4939g

After market £2.10. OEM £4.80. Genuine Land rover £18.02. Go figure why that should be. Land rover do take a wee wee.

Pretty sure I asked for OEM. Got a feeling I bought it from Dingocroft but will have to find the receipt.

It didn't look red last time. That was the odd thing. Definitely ATF in transfer box. It went bl**dy everywhere because my syringe thing was leaking.

Well that's the only place it can come from, had same on mine a few years ago.

If you need help just say, we can do mine at the same time @Grrrrrr

Your handbrake needs doing? Bring it up. I've moved house since I last saw you so I have a bit more room to play with now. @brianp38dse can come along too and we'll have a full house on the drive!

@brianp38dse, there is a breather, I think. There's definitely one down the side there somewhere. I remember putting new washers on that one and the one on top of the gearbox. I'll take another look on Saturday. I'll be well ****ed off if that transfer box has to come off again though.

OK just give me a date, I have the stuff already, I cant make it early on sat because I have to go in each week for 2 hours to sort out exports but I am done by 10am @Grrrrrr
