Which way do you point your snorkel intake, and why?

I see both forward and backward. Mine is backward since the idea, as I understand it, is to avoid drawing water and/or dust into the engine. From my experience of driving behind people in dust and sand, and splashing through rivers, the obvious answer is "backwards".

Any views on this?

I always thought forwards as it scoops the cleaner air above bonnet level, though have heard of turning them backwards for reasons youve mentioned

Mine is backwards as it reduces damage to the intake grill and ingress of branches and leaves.

Have lost the forward facing one 3 times on lanes where big branches have hooked under it, once i ran it over.

As mine is sealed, I actually now carry a spare top just in case, as if it is raining heavily and the top is missing the rain is going straight down it..LOL

I use a mushroom style one, no problems which way round I put it!

It's been proven (by my mate Daz the spaz) that bhp of the 200/300 TDI will increase by up to 14 % when going backwards with a rear facing snokle.
So it follows that snookels should face the direction you wish to go fastest in.

That is why I fitted a 5 reverse speed gearbox, simples innit....Slow going forward so I changed that back . So then I had a brainwave.....I wanted to fit one that followed the direction of the wind, I fitted summin like a weather vane to the top and left it loose so it could rotate......................, and it fell orft.........

The back of yer motor will have more dust on it that the front, vortaces or summit. Splashing through puddles you want it backwards, driving dusty roads forwards. Or fit a mushroom and worry not.

My snorkel's at about 45 degrees .. So it brushes branches and foliage aside without catching leaves or getting ripped off. Pointing backwards it got more dusty than pointing forwards .. at least that's what the air filters told me after Salisbury Plain and elsewhere ..

Surely that should be checked as part of the PM's like the rest of the vehicle. I routinely check mine will stall the engine if sealed off at the top of the pipe.

Darn light bar would get in the way on mine.

lol removed my snorkel to fit a light bar!, never got round to it, sold snorkel in the end.

Mazda people carriers have snorkel fitted as standard in some cases as standard and they point backwards...if it was to stop water intake you'd need a bloody scuba diving kit to drive...and if a modern LR where's the ECU??? on the roof rack...

They're for dry dusty areas not wet boggy GREEN laaning in UK...rather than spend money on a snorkel buy a pressure washer to clean wet mud from rad in the UK...you know it makes sense...
