Hello all,

So I have a RR L322, had it looked at a few weeks ago and when it was put on for diagnostics, it basically said that there was a problem changing from 5th to 6th gear, when I've been driving for a while and only on the motorway when it reaches gear 5 it will slip down to 3rd gear, revs will increase at it will go into limp mode, have to pull over turn the engine off, restart it and then its fine. They said it sounds like it needs a new gear box? looking at £2500 for that!!!!

Does anyone know if this will resolve it or please im praying it is a cheap fix :D

Could be that the rear stator bush has worn (common fault with the 6HP26) and it’s allowing the hydraulic pressure for the E-clutch to escape. The E-clutch is used in 4th, 5th & 6th gears so the mechatronic defaults to 3rd gear if it senses the clutch slipping.

The bushes aren’t expensive (a full set containing all 14 costs around £60) and the stator is the first thing to come out of the transmission, along with the oil pump, when it is disassembled. It therefore isn’t necessary to rebuild the whole transmission to replace the stator bush.

The worst bit is therefore getting the transmission in and out of the vehicle. I’m not sure what the book time is for this on the L322 with a 6HP26 but for the 5HP24 it was 4.7 hours, so an independent would charge around £300.

Clearly you would need to be sure that this was indeed the problem. Are you having any issues with 4th or 5th gears, as well as 6th, at all? One test that could be carried out would be to remove the mechatronic unit from the sump and apply air pressure to the E-clutch feed directly, to check if it was leaking.

Bemble don't have a ramp,

at least he alludes to that fact, too much of a distraction I'd say and also it would probably be very close, or even within.......his empire of cleanliness and gearbox cure all's.

The zf 4HP22 in the Classic has a similar problem. There are two metal sealing rings on the input shaft which wear & this allows leakage to pressurise the 'A' clutch. This clutch provides forward drive & the result is that the 'A' clutch plates wear very quickly & you finish up with reverse only. Common on all vehicles that use the 4HP22 incl BMW.

For anyone after parts for the autoboxes I've used these & found them very good with fast delivery. They take cards.
https://jpat.co.uk/zf.html Click on the box number you've got & you'll get an exploded diagram with all the bits numbered.

Ah, that's a shame. Well, she can print off his advice and the garage can follow it!

I must admit, when I hear the words L322 and TDV6 now I just think "gearbox" and then "FUBAR".
On two different vehicle of course.

Or are you thinking TD6 with the cheesier box?
The earlier box made of cheese.
I think Andy may have been alluding to the fact the L322 doesn't have a TDV6 variant. TD6 or TDV8 for the diesels. Or I could be wrong and he wasn't :p :D

Theses are the codes for my problem. I am being told this is a new gearbox with out it being checked. Would this be the case??

@GinaG

I'd guess the code being generated is indeed what @Bemble has suggested is the fault.

Why not ask him to fix it for you?

He is the all knowing God on the ZF boxes and just happens to have a gearbox rebuild company.

All you'd need to do is arrange for a garage to remove the box, send it to him and bobs your aunty.

I'd hazard a guess at a less than £1000 all told, inc. shipping and fit/removal.
