I have a Vogue SE 3.6 v8 diesel 2006, engine suddenly died when driving and vehicle had to be recovered by AA. Normal garage thinks the timing has jumped but cannot properly diagnose. Local 4x4 centre not interested in looking at it. Has anyone else experienced same issue and how much did it cost to diagnose and put right? I should also add that engine turns over but won’t start. Thanks

How many miles has the engine done - have you a good service history for the car?

Does it crank normally or is it faster than usual or uneven?

Did the engine cut out (like you'd turned the ignition off) or fade away quickly. Any noises etc?

Diagnostics is the only way initially if this hasn't been done already.

Hi Fergie46
Engine has 134k miles and has been regularly serviced. It did have an internal clean approx 2k miles ago and the emissions were very low when recorded when MOT'd in November. Something similar happened 2 weeks prior to main issue with a warning light saying "engine system fault", switched engine off, left for a minute and it re-started fine. This time the revs suddenly dropped to zero, no warning messages. When trying to start, lots of black smoke from exhaust and engine sounds lumpy and fails to run for more than 2 seconds or so. Garage said diagnostics doesn't show any faults. Cranking seems to be same as normal.

I am sure if the timing had jumped - you would get scarey noises as the valves and pistons run very close to each other to maintain high compressions in diesels.

If the timing was out, valves and pistons may meet with horrible noises!

Black smoke in diesels is burnt diesel with not enough air usually.
