Went digging about the defender I just bought more rigorously than I did when purchasing unfortunately and managed to put my thumb through the chassis! What areas should I be checking for more if there is any? Any advice would be great. Cheers in advance.

All of the chassis tbh, and that is going to need plating at best but once you start cleaning that back it will become a bigger hole.

Better to find and fix thougj

prepare for some welding, good strong scraper to clean off chassis paint. or needle gun followed by hammer, grinder then plate holes

Before you start power washing it, get familiar with where it collects and holds mud/road muck. Outriggers, rear cross member, behind gearbox cross member bolting flanges. The muck holds moisture in that location and accelerates the rusting process at that point. The hole you have shown is where moisture has worked from the inside out. :(

that is what put the fear in to me is that the rust has come from inside out! Just bought it for 7k .... could do with out it needing a chassis haha

Ive just done a mates gearbox & put my hand on the top of chassis under the seat box to pull
myself under & it crumbled, took the seat box out & both legs were rotten at the top easy enough
to plate but it added an extra few hours onto the job, oh how I love landys :D

I think you are going to be seriously shocked/peed off
What model/year is it?

I can see hours/days of fun, or pug/paint/auction!

Chassis swap with all the other stuff you find/need you are going to be the thick end of 3 maybe 4k.

Not liking all the comments so far haha I had a look at the rest of the chassis today and to my untrained eye it looked to be okay but I will take more pictures tomorrow and post them in here

Never mind! Hopefully that’s the worst of the decay! Don’t despair, everything’s fixable on a Landy, would have been nice to have a solid chassis for 7k, but you’re not the first !
Yeah to be honest I should have done my research a bit more before buying as it is my first defender. you live and learn I suppose! Haha
