2001 TD4 Water Pump replace quotes

damn I love this car. Lots of very happy times. Great snow car.

Failed the MOT. Drop links & trailing arms, brake pipe corrosion. Those I regard as normal old car upkeep. But the Water Pump sounds like about to die, and I been quoted around £120 for a Pump and £600 labour.

So, do I spend on the MOT & Pump work £1200+ total, or retire her from life

Been looking at various Scrappage offers, but they do seem con tricks, e.g. cash price for some new cars is same as those I was offered £3000 'discount' for. Same, no real discount versus cash price.

Help me here. Retired and bean counting these days...

How much labour to change the water pump? I thought you said £600. You did say £600 labour. I'm in the wrong job. I should own your garage!! It's 2 hours work to change a TD4 pump. That means they are charging £300 per hour.
You need to find another garage that aren't going to rip you off.

Drop links are 15 minutes per side tops. (Just changed mine for MOT)
Brake pipes are an 2.5 hours for the complete rear including new flexy pipes and wheel cylinders.(Just changed mine for MOT)
Trailing arms are 30 minutes per side to remove them correctly. Cutting them off and replacing the whole lot including bolts (not as expensive as is sounds) will be faster.
You have perhaps 4 hours, MOT work there, tops.
Plus the WP already mentioned.

LOL doesn't really convey it. I really did laugh out loud when I saw that quote - it made the dog jump.

Your garage is either very greedy, or just doesn't want the job. You could get the clutch done for that kind of money.

Like nodge said. They dont want the job/ They dont know how to do the job/ They will pay the local landy indy to do the job and cream a slice off the top for them selfs.

It depends where you are and who does it. I know mine only cost £180 in labour because I still have the receipt. The woman I bought the car off knew the garge owner and he just did it cheapest he could. RESULT!

I bought a ruville water pump from my local motor factors for £48 and had it fitted for £50 labour charge. A new thermostat and housing was fitted too (£20 from ebay).
Ruville pumps are made by the same company that make LUK clutches, and are excellent quality.
I agree with pardec on the labour charge

They did say a mechanics' guide said it would be over 6 hours labour just for the Water Pump. That be the Rave CD ?

Been reading here, of those who tried the removal-refit themselves with just wheel-ramps, spanners & first-aid kits. Seems access to bolts and not being Jimmy Olsen Elastic Lad is the issue.

What is actually directly in the way of the Torx spanners when trying this job? Is it the inner arch bodywork itself or engine mounts?

Can't face losing such a fine drive for a titchy little Pump!

Both. The hydramount has a 'cheek' mounted on the inner wing that gets in the way. I haven't done a water pump, but have done the thermostat, which is nearly as bad a job, I think. A ratchet torx spanner is your friend here. Just think how many sets you could buy with £600!

Find a decent Landy independent garage. Whereabouts are you?

The water pump/thermostat assembly can be removed as one unit, I found it easier than removing just the stat. The pump is held on with allen headed bolts if I remember correctly.

The water pump isn't even that hard to replace I've not long done it and only parts I've changed before is Glow plugs coolant pipe and anti roll bar links..
I used a jack with a but of wood to support and move engine up and down as needed hardest part was getting the metal coolant rail back in place as some nob had bent it before I owned it

But before you decide to get the water pump changed. It's well worth checking that the noise isn't the bottom pulley beginning to fail. That's much more common than WP failure.
