hi newbe on here. i brought a 2001 td4 freelander, i have the three amigos and the handbrake light on, does anyone know anywhere for a cheap diagnostic check around birmingham? the guy selling the car said the battery died and the lights just came on.....then flew off in a unicorn lol. i got it dirt cheap anyway, we all have to start somewhere!

Hello and welcome. Someone will be along quite soon who may be able to give some advice. I have a FL1 1.8 petrol. 3 amigos can be a variety of things. One thing I've read on here is that the brake light switch on the pedal itself is a known failure point.

It would be good if you popped over to the "Introduce Yourself" section and put an introductory post about yourself there.

Handbrake switch probably needs a clean or replace. Same for the Brake switch that located at the top of the brake pedal. Have a look when he vehicle been serviced and the details on the MOT. Parts are cheap enough to replace.

Definitely replace the brake light switch first, it'll cost less than a tenner and solves meny light issues.

update...changed brake pedal switch, handbrake switch, even that other one in the gold case by handbrake and nowt...all still on grrrr. i did hear quite a clunk from the back brakes earlier so maybe thats the nxt port of call. thanks guys

You should always get the diagnostic codes read when the 3 Amigos are lit. There are ways of testing if (for example) the sensors are working, but if you replace parts without reading the codes - you are just taking a gamble (usually wrong) that what ever you're changing is the fault.

There are some exceptions - eg if your brake lights don't come on, it may be worth a punt on changing the brake switch. Also - you look to have 4 Amigos. This is very unusual, so you could try reading the Freelander Rave workshop manual to see what it says when 4 are lit. This thread gives you info on downloading the manual...

For what its worth - as the hand brake light is lit, I recon it could be a 'normal' brake issue like low brake fluid or a faulty brake fluid level sensor.

Was that when releasing the handbrake? Rear brakes on Freelanders have a habit of sticking. Another little job for you.

The "three amigos" in my case was a faulty abs sensor in one of the back hubs. Code read flagged that up.

yeah im going to get the codes read. it looks like it might be the rears stickinv. thanks
