After a long lay off i decided to resume the rebuild by changing the leaky pinion oil seal. I made up a bracket to hold the flange while i undid the nut and knocked the flange off. I was expecting to just hook out the old seal and tap in the new one but the old seal seems to be behind a steel cover which i will destroy while removing it. As ive only got the new seal (FTC5258G). i wondered how to do it and do i need this steel cover?

ftc5258 seal is for later rover diffs ,you need aeu2515, you need to rise old seal out and fit a new spacer and gasket too 607138 and 607197 or place old spacer over a suitable bar and hammer it a little longer

Hi James, i was hoping you were about since it was you who sent me this one;). I cant find any tutorials on the web but is it straight forward enough?
didnt know it was for a salisbury, once you removed old seal pull out gasket tin shield bearing and spacer refit your new and old bits, then tighten pinion nut till all free play had gone add a little preload and it will be good, nut will take some tightening so go carefully and feel often once free play has gone

At the moment with the nut off i have play in and out and side to side, is this what will go when tightening down the crush spacer? Also cant get gasket with the part no you gave me but can get spacer and seal. Any company you know will have all three?

you could use rtv silicone sealant instead, you will have play till bearings are preloaded or at least free play removed, with new bearings after setting it would be hard to turn flange by hand but if you can get so theres no free play and can then feel some induced drag that will be fine for run in bearings
